2D lattice defects twins are the fundamental responce that accompanies a crystal growth in the nature. There is a lot of reasons for twinning under these conditions. One of them is complicated structure of crystal as it takes place in organic crystals. Some people say that crystal growing is sooner an art then a science. By selection of quality single crystals as a seed is it possible to avoid crystal twinning
If you want to get large crystals you have to seed the system with crystals (as pointed by you) and work with low supersaturation all the crystallization, thats mean not to grow so fast, seeding time is also very important: try to seed just after the solution is supersaturated.
Whether a compound crystallizes as a twin is partly compound dependent. Furthermore, when doing crystallizations from solutions, the solvent was often found to have a crucial influence upon the presence of absence of crystal twinning.
