Currently, I'm doing plant extraction using Methanol as the solvent. Now I have 31g of P.longifolia powdered plant material.
In order to get the maximum extract, how much proportion of methanol should be added? And how long do I need to soak the powdered plant materials in methanol?

To get the max. extract, you should use methanol up to the extent that your material should be fully saturate and it should float in the solvent for overnight per one extraction. The extraction should be repeated for 3-4 extractions to get possible maximum extract..
The amount of methanol should be enough to dip all the plant material.It will be better to dip for three days with some shaking or mixing after some time and repeat it three to four times till there is no extract in the solvent
Depending on the goal of extraction, physical properties of the sample, and procedure of extraction (see comment from Olga Lock), the amount of methanol used for extraction can vary. For analytical purposes, repeated extractions are not recommended. On the other hand, exhaustive extraction may require repeated extractions. The concentration in the second or third extraction will be much lower than in the first one. Plant material with "plant cell" intact require longer extractions, while finely powdered plant material may be extracted in times as short as 30 min. If the concentration of the final extract is important, and the solubility of the compounds to be extracted is high, as little as five times more methanol (in weight) may be used, Otherwise, larger volumes are recommended. The temperature of extraction is also important. Temperatures up to 60-70 oC typically do not affect the extract composition.
What is the type of plant part. Did it leaves or seeds.
You need 125 ml methanol for 24 hours. It is very enough.

i used 150 mL of solvent for 40 g of powdered plant material of aerial parts of plant and than repeated the procedure for two time with 75 and 75mL of solvent. and i get good result. if u are looking for complete extraction of plant material than go for soxhlet extraction. if you r using simple maceration than extract the same plant material minimum 4-5 time in order to have complete extraction.

The proportion of sample: solvent (1 : 10) is usually used for plant extraction.
You should use soxhlet extractor in which you have to take 170 to 175 ml methanol for extraction. Repeat the extraction process for 3 cycles. It will take 3 hours and temperature required is 65 degree C. The extract is used for phytochemical screening as well as further characterization like GC-MS , HPLC etc after evaporation of maximum part of solvent.
With methanol to obtain maximum methanolic extract, extract powdered plant with 310 ml MeOH.Then you recovered MeOH upto 100ml with rotavapour device.
