Hello,
I am trying to spin coat a few layers of monomer solution in THF onto a porous support. What would be the best procedure to do so?
Intuitively, it seems that every new coating would dissolve the previous one. Some have suggested drying between layers, but is that really necessary since I'm using THF? Also, is it crucial to polymerise the monomer before applying the second coat? I am coating a few layers to ensure the formation of a defect free film. Any help is appreciated. thanks for reading.

You can't use the same solution to coat multiple layer thin films. For sure, it would dissolve the underneath layer either partially or completely when you spin coating on the top of it. You could do layer by layer after each layer monomer polymerization using thermal heat or light conversation. Alternatively you could use vapor deposition techique to coat your monomers. It is much easy to control. Hope it helps.

Xuhua is absolutely correct.
Generally, the applied solvent is usually volatile, and simultaneously evaporates. Polymeric multi-layered mirrors by spin coating under the control of the optical thickness can be done but different roughness level is a issue, thermal heat and one solution will not be enough. Physical deposition (sputtering, spin coating or E-beam), can be utilized to deposit multiple thin films of different materials onto a substrate.
