Would anyone anyone know what type of material is used for the nozzle/rotary atomizer when spray drying tungsten carbide powder? We would like to reduce ware and increase the life of the spray dryer but tungsten carbide is so abrasive that we are unable to do so at this time.
If you use compressed air slurry spraying (two-substance nozzle), wear in such a nozzle is relatively small due to the low speed of the slurry passing through the large diameter hole. In this case, a stainless steel nozzle is sufficient.
If you want to use a high pressure liquid nozzle (single nozzle) or rotary atomization, then the steel is abraded by the fast particles of tungsten carbide very quickly. In this case, the small diameter nozzle insert of the high pressure nozzle or the rotary spray tray must be made of ceramic or hard metal. The optimum material for these applications is boron carbide, which is used for the nozzles of sandblasting devices.
