An important priority should be the reduction of the structural deformability under lateral loads. Thence, the first objective of an intervention should be that of reducing the deformability of the structure in the case of the most severe design earthquake, which determines an excessive degradation of the mechanical characteristics of the masonry. At the same time, the intervention should be designed in such a way that the structural response under vertical service loads is not altered.
