I understand the first part of the quotation, but 2nd part is really super intriguing for me.

2. Life itself suggests this. For example, in my younger years, my life credo was the expression of the great Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov «So life is boring when there is no fight!». With the years passed, this changed to its own – « To know a little about everything, and to know all about a little!». And these few I have chosen the science of landscapes. There are many sayings in Russian, I know hundreds, maybe even thousands. I have always share folk sayings and "quotes of classics." If the first are constantly present in everyday speeches and often used, then the last are the destiny of intellectuals and are not kept in memory, despite its accuracy and some brilliance. Only parts of folk sayings are often quoted in a speech, since many know the sequel. A typical expression for Russians: "God is God, but do not be bad himself" is often pronounced in truncated form: "God is God ...". In my opinion, the main advantage of sayings is brevity, an exact expression of moral intention. A long quote, even if it is correct, does not achieve results, just as a long joke does not seem ridiculous (Russians often ironically ask: “Can I laugh already?”). The vast majority of sayings came to us from antiquity, but there are examples of modern sayings that have arisen recently. I really like two of these: “We wanted the best, but it turned out as always” (Former Prime Minister of Russia V. Chernomyrdin, he was a great master of words) and “the one who dances and sings, he sings and dances, the one who plows and forges, he forges and plows " (unknown sailor).
