you should know the maximum compressive strength of the material being tested (if you are referring to the loading rate)
Everything depends on type of rock and their deformability under constant stress level. First of all, during the creep test you have to control the stres-strain curves. While keeping the same level of loading in hour, days or longer periods, you should observe changes of displacement/strain of the rock sample. Usually, at the first stage of deformation, its velocity is higher, becoming slower with time, and finally the velocity is constant, and then you can increase the loading level and repeat the same observations (several times for different levels). So, the most important criterion for the length (time/period) of the creep test is the certainty, that the deformation velocity at the speciific loading level is constant. You can icnrease loading several Times at different levels until 70% of the UCS.
