There is no the minimum number of research articles one needs to consult before producing a research article. You should make proper literature review, justify your methods and compare your results with previous research.
0. I have done it. But nobody believes me that I did not have to read much before I could write. So I must now search for citation in retrospect even though I completed my writings before starting to read.
In general, colleagues are right. In addition, the number of articles a person must consult before submitting their article for publication may be reduced if there are strict guidelines of the target journal concerning the inclusion of recently published articles (for example 10 years or less) in its References list.

There is no definite, minimum number to consult before producing a research article. However, your paper should include such references that clarify the status of understanding by researchers about the topic you treated.
Innumerable, as much as available atleast 10 years down the line; relevant to your core research focus.
There is no any exact number, try to consult the most latest article if possible.

In last Review article I have submitted to a journal (not still published), I have added 145 references.
None of these references can be deleted from the article!

Editorial: 5-15
Short communication: 15-25
Original research: 40-50
Research review/critical review/systematic review article: 50-300

There is no direct rule of thumb. Backward citation depends on the content of the quoted script and borrowing analysis/methodology/results etc.

Consult good related and current papers in the field of research. The number should be substantial enough to be convinced of the research gap you want to fill with your study.
Well, the thing is that there is no any benchmark for citing minimum or maximum number of articles. Point is whatever you cite, it should be relevant to and support your topic. Do not cite articles just for citations BUT use them as tools which help you to build your arguments. Too much citations does not mean your article becomes valuable. CITE to improve quality of your write up NOT the number of references.

There is no exact number. The key is to know what work has been done & what are the Research gaps. It would be disappointing if you started on a subject, and then in the middle of your work realize that somebody else has already worked on it, and that too is well recognized and of a superior order.
