I believe that when a person is enrolled in a PhD program, he/she must have adequate knowledge of the discipline he/she is majoring to meet the level needed for a researcher. He/she must be familiar with research methodologies and related procedures. In addition, this person must know how to integrate available technology in developing better conditions in the discipline, and have adequate communications with other researchers through research gate or any other possible links to facilitate knowledge dissemination and enrich his knowledge.
I think being able to manage time is one of the success factors for PhD students. I know from my own experience that research takes time, so I even undertook a speed reading course to enable me to complete these readings and finish within the time allotted on my student visa.
Apart of a Masters Degree, what are some of the basic qualities one need to possess before he/she can successfully under a PhD training ?
Some of the qualities to successfully complete PhD include:
Passion - motivate you to complete the PhD study
Perseverance - sustain you when you stuck somewhere during the PhD pursuit
Resourcefulness - know how to seek help when confronting obstacles e.g. peer or supervisor interaction, networking, research community, ResearchGate etc.
Technical Competency - know your subject well, comprehensive / rigorous literature review, familiarity with the right research methodology etc.
Project Management Competency - treat PhD research as a project i.e. have start & end dates and know how to manage research scope boundary, research resources, time, cost etc.
I believe the other important qualities in this regard are the capacity to think independently and rationally, of course a dedication and love towards the subject and topic of research interest is also a crucial factor.
