Exam fear is a very common phenomenon among many a students, and it has a disastrous effect, no doubt. But, have the authorities ever tried to think about the causes of the fear, to remove the fear & make exam an enjoyable task rather than a scaring one, to focus upon the students in order to make them capable to overcome their fear especially on weak students to make them stronger?
Dear Maytham Qabel Hamzah, Exam is not only knowing the study subject matter but also the level of analysis beyond the scope sometimes. Moreover, students are going to evaluated for their fate and some subjects are difficult. These and other factors will add up and create some sort of tension/stress that contribute for the said fear of examination.
The exam as a method of evaluating the students understanding & absorption of what is taught needs to be downgraded and alternate evaluation processes like assignments, quizzes, projects etc need to be introduced. Exams need to be less of test of memory and more of application of analytical abilities. Only then this examination fever will subside.
The student may be concerned about the exam, which is an emotional psychological state. It is accompanied by unusual psychological and physical reactions due to your expectation of failure in the exam or poor performance, fear of failure and reaction of the parents, weakening of your confidence or your desire to excel. Of anxiety .. So there is no need to fear him at all, but you must prepare in the study and make it a driving force for achievement and effort and activity, to meet your need for success and excellence and self-verification and achieve ambitions.
One other reason is the person setting the question paper, instead of testing the knowledge level of the students, trying to show-off his wisdom by deliberately asking questions from some obscure corner or questions with a twist.
To add. Exams assess one kind of result and one type of student, and realistically do not assess potential. Do they select genuine PhD students for example with the capacity to do in-depth work? Possessing a good memory is not necessarily an advantage in research.
because their knowledge is superficial and depends on their memory and that makes the fear of not remembering the memorized, what you have to teach them is to deepen, understand and thus not depend on their memory
Not all students have this feeling, only diligent students who fear that their ratings will drop.
The reason for their fear is their high interest in the exam and its outcome, which is represents a great importance to them, unlike their peers who are not interested in it.
Thanks for sharing this interesting question. All students afraid of exam? I think its anxiety on the part of diligent students and fear of failing on the part of truant and unprepared students. Best regards
the most stressful factor is poor preparation for the exam. But in my didactic work I sometimes had to deal with a student who was perfectly prepared, and yet stress overpowered him and he was unable to answer the question despite encouragement from my side.
Dear Joanna, I agree with you. This personal psychological characteristics of a person are governed by fear. This can happen to anyone. Not only with the student
The first reason for failure dealt with a student’s skills. These next three reasons deal with motivation, the first of which is fear.
Fear in students manifests in two primary ways. First, some students are afraid of failure. For these students, putting forward all your effort into your school work can only result in one of two things. Either you do fine, leave with a grade that affirms your intelligence and says to the world, “I am as smart as I thought I was,” or … you don’t. The other option is you make a grade that isn’t as high as you thought you should earn. The result is being able to say, “Yes, World, I do have rocks for brains. I am really that dumb.” Many students, whether they’ll admit it or not, simply don’t want to face the cold, hard reality that they may not be as smart as they hoped they’d be.
Truthfully, everyone fails at something sometime. It doesn’t mean you have rocks for brains. It means you are a human being. Embrace failure, learn from it, and keep on truckin’.
Second, some students are afraid of success. Believe it or not, this is a significant issue. For these students succeeding puts them in the spotlight, and they’d rather stay in the shadows. Many would rather underachieve, not expending too much energy on anything, so that they can just skirt by without drawing too much attention to themselves. Perhaps academic success would mean they are one of the “smart kids,” which is often interpreted as “dorks.” Achieving success and recognition is scarier than forever being considered merely mediocre.
A feeling of inadequacy, as a result of fear of failure produces in humans a form of fear to approach any situation that will subject them to any form of test or examination. it is a form of fear of the unknown.
