Do (Research) what you really know and having strong interest during your postgraduate study. This will keep you moving irrespective of the challenges you may face. Just doing anything simply because you want to acquire higher degree (MSc, PhD, etc) may lead to poor thesis that may not feature in reputable journals.
It is very important to choose your advisor wisely. You should both feel comfortable working with each other and your advisor should be competent and direct you. I think the best secret is to be passionate about what you’re writing.
