While reading electronic band structure, the horizontal axis consists of some Letters of latin and greek alphabet without any obvious pattern. It turns out that there letters corresponds to high-symmetry points on Brillouin zone of the solid being concerned, and traversing the biroouin zone surface from only a handful of directions is enough to precify energy-vs-wavevector profile of a solid.

But the lettering is different from different bravais lattice

  • Why the letters mean what they mean ?(e.g. for Elements, H for hydrogen is generator (gen) of water (hydro), Hg for Mercury for Hydrargyrum- it flows like water (hydro) and shiny like silver (argyrum), Lu for Lutecium, since Paris where the element was discovered is lutecia in latin)
  • Why cannot there be any unified notation here for all lattices like Coexeter or Hermann-Mauguin notation, or perhaps Strukturbericht notation?
