One of the recent trends in automobile industry is the innovation of driverless cars. Knowing fully well how the Geographic Information Systems and road networks of the developing African nations are striving hard to come into being. One may tend to wonder about the prospect of driverless cars in the African region. What are your points of view on the subject matter?
In my opinion, the future of these cars seems very far to me in sub-Saharan Africa. One of the major reasons is the high rate of unemployment and especially among drivers to motivate self-driving vehicles. In addition, there is the need to respect a certain number of traffic rules, including pedestrians on which the vehicles' embedded instruments are set.

Not immediate because some discipline is required first, but also why would you need a driverless car as long as you can afford a chauffeur? Trucks are a different story.
Driverless cars will be relevant in areas where the cost of manpowoer is high, which makes automation cheaper than hiring a driver. Also, even the best Google Maps cannot track the road conditions that are subject to change due to various factors. Hence driverless cars are not required in Sub Saharan Africa, unless someone is keen to show-off!
I doubt their affordability to the majority of the less income earners in sub-Sahara. A lot of education and rules in its use must be given to the general populace. Yet, it would be a wonderful initiative.
No future yet unless the basic problems are fixed there will be no need for a driver less car in an economy fraught with problems like hunger, poverty, malnutrition, poor housing, poor and collapsed road networks, unemployment, religious and ethnic scuffles, corruption etc. Unless the basic problems are solved I don't see a future for drive less cars
There is a future for the cars. Are these cars made for the average/poor individuals? No! they have their target audience, although, they are few - elites/rich/politicians. These people like to display their wealth with pride even the so called celebrity(s)-artists/entertainers. You see them buying sport cars like buggati/ferrari which sleep in garage because the road are bad or not motorable. The problem I forsee is the GPS and I think interested companies would surely do something on it. Not all states will be target, they will focus on major cities. There is still prospect.
My biggest issue is the availability of enabling infrastructure and data. Is the communication infrastructure available in a way that supports deployment of AVs? Thinking of 5g and other high capacity connectivity.
