It is clearly mentioned in literature that UV is effective in destroying the nucleic acids in these organisms so that their DNA is disrupted by the UV radiation, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions. Is there any other function of UV in sterilization purposes rather than affecting/mutating Nucleic Acids?
e.g: in germicidal irradiation/water purification
UV irradiation (at high UV dose, typically greater than 500 mJ/cm2) is often coupled with hydrogen peroxide to generate hydroxyl radical which indiscriminately reacts with organic material and oxidize them CO2 and H2O. This process is commonly referred to UV advanced oxidation. This process is commonly used in indirect potable reuse and advanved water treatment projects.
Beside nuleic acids also aromatic amino acids strongly absorb UV radiation, hence, proteins may be disrupted by action of UV as well...
