It is clearly mentioned in literature that UV is effective in destroying the nucleic acids in these organisms so that their DNA is disrupted by the UV radiation, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions. Is there any other function of UV in sterilization purposes rather than affecting/mutating Nucleic Acids?

e.g: in germicidal irradiation/water purification
