Is it to magnify God? Is it to surrender to God? Is it to cultivate emotional wisdom, such as developing inner peace and serenity and reducing our fear? A combination? Or something else?
Almost all humans have their fears and worries about different aspects of their every day lives.Notably, religion and religious practices provide individuals with useful ways by which they can find solace and peace of mind by integrating their experiences and emotional states with their bodies and minds on the one hand and with others sharing similar beliefs on the other. As such, humans try to transcend beyond mundane and ordinary affairs of daily life connecting with the divine sphere where they can fly out of their narrow , limited selves and cultivate a considerable emotional balance reaching inner peace and serenity.. In point of fact, the spiritual stance would give them a wonderful ability to integrate the body, mind, and spirit creating a sense of psychological and physical atmosphere by which they can lift themselves out of disappointment and depression knowing that divine powers are watching over them and protecting them against the stings and arrows of the outrageous everyday lives.
What is fascinating that all Gods love to be worshipped, most of them punish the lack of praying. How does the worshipping provide any satisfaction for a God?
Religious worship helps humans to attend to their spiritual duties towards the higher spirits. It assists them to fulfill their spiritual needs and drive for appeasing the higher spirits whom they believe are the caretakers of their health, success and general well-being for the present and future. Best regards
Many of the contributions are very interesting. Refelct that worship is also a powerful poltical tool. Community worship such as in the abrahamic religions brings power to those conducting worship, such as the priest, imam, rabbi. To exert contol over a community means tremendous power......
It is for our spirit to have relationship with God through singing praises to Him, prayer for His forgiveness, wisdom, strength etc, Holy Communion, testimony etc.
I'm not a much religious person. So, the function of religious worship to me is best expressed by your third interpretation, i.e., to cultivate emotional wisdom.
Worship is to obey the Almighty ALLAH (GOD) the creater and the sustainer
of the universe .Peace and internal satisfaction are the temporary fruit of that in this world while actual reward will be given in the life after death
RELIGION AND WORSHIPING are two different things. Having a total faith in god, a sense of fear of wrong doing, a desire to always chant hymns in the name of god with utmost devotion and being involved only in good deeds is itself a kind of religious worship. We all agree that none of us can see god because there is something called Egotism and egotism is like a cloud which keeps god hidden from our sight( Source: The message of Rama Krishna ParamaHamsa) : A hindu vesion of vedantic philisophy.
This is one of the topics I am not too comfortable . I relate to my religion , where we are taught rituals /customs / worship is to bring us together and celebrate .
We have 2 major school of thoughts :
1. Advaita (I belong to this ) where we believe see the god in everyone (where atma (soul) and Paramatma (God) are same but different forms)
2. Dvaita (God is supreme ) so praise him and surrender to him so that he will work things for you ...
We insist on "Bhakti" pure surrendering to the will of god , not so much fear :)
The Religious Worship Function is part of the Tradition and Culture of human groups that live in society and respect the way they apply and transmit: the knowledge, faith, beliefs, values, virtues and norms of their religion; from religious leaders (priests for example), to family leaders (parents) or social or governmental leaders of human groups (union leader, municipal president, governor, etc.).

I totally agree with Eberhard Weber. Organized religion is a way to leverage the need of the simple minded who cannot cope by themselves with the difficulties of spiritual issues by providing guidance which many times is (ab)used by those in knowledge to their own purposes or agendas.
From a scientific perspective, there are many functional consequences of religious practices. Some religious practices help people reduce anxiety (Article Effects of Anxiety on Spontaneous Ritualized Behavior
), which might be close to the fear reduction you mention. Other rituals help with group cohesion (

). The effects of religious practice or worship will largely depend on the features of that practice– is it dysphoric, synchronous, affective...?
