Formaldehyde is formed in several common industrial processes and sometime goes unnoticed or unmonitored to the determent of workers and the environment. The USEPA is slowly increasing their oversight of this. Formaldehyde can be created when burning natural gas from some sources. The process shown in this figure isn't a problem as long as you keep the moles of air per mole of fuel above 7, but this is not always the case.
Formaldehyde isn't the only problem. Burning landfill gas (in a gas turbine generator to produce electricity) with ammonia injection to control one type of emission (NOx) can result in a much worse emission, namely cyanide. In this case you must keep the moles of air per mole of fuel above 10.
