The possible benefit from the use of Statins in the treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is based on the following premises:
A. AS is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
B. Atherosclerosis is increasingly recognized as an inflammatory process.
C. Statins have proven anti-inflammatpry effects:
1. Inhibition of leucocyte–endothelial adhesion
2. Inhibition of production and reduced chemoattraction of monocyte chemotactic protein-1
3. Reduced interleukin-6 (IL 6), IL-8 and IL-1β production
4. Statins decrease T cell activation
But we still need well-designed studies to prove that statins do have a role in the treatment of AS.
Thanks a lot Majda for your answer.Best regards
Unfortunately, there are still no good evidence-based studies that prove the beneficial effects of statins in AS.
Thanks a lot Panayot for your answer.
