Can someone explain what are the key differences in a hydrodynamic model like MIKE 3 FM and using a CFD model? Is it only about the resolution/ accuracy of turbulence and eddy calculations? Or is there more to it? Thank you
- Main important difference is hydrostatic assumption for vertical direction in Mike3 compared to Fluent, or Flow3D or OpenFoam
- Mike3 can use curvilinear projected grid for geophysical flow
- Mike 3 is low order solver (not high or higher order solver)
- Meshing of Mike3 is primitive compared to CFD software packages
- Load balancing in many CFD software packages is automated and embeded and you can run on multi core or multi machine
- You have many turbulence closures in CFD packages as compared to Mike 3
I believe Mike3 has a vertical non-hydrostatic model included in their package although it works on a rectangular mesh grid only, not flexible.
Not all standard CFD codes provide tools for straightforward simulation of free surface flows, which is the application domain of models like MIKE3.
