In fiber optic systems sometimes the optical switches are used instead of coupler because they have smaller loss so the improve the SNR but more complex and expensive. Is this true? And what is the difference between the circulator and the optical switch? If the coupler has 4 input/outputs and the circulator has 3 ones, is this thing fixed or can be changed according to the circulator or the coupler? What about the switch?
