In our setup(Pakistan) full time Ph. D duration of study is minimum 3 years while it is 6 years for the part time students as per guide line provided by the official governing body (Pakistan Higher Education Commission). I want to know whether it is some thing uniform all over the world please comment about the system in your country along with the name of your country.
In Turkey, PhD duration is 4-6 years. After 6 years, you can't go on PhD.
In my university in Australia, a full time PhD usually takes 3 to 4 years full-time, 4 to 8 years part-time.
In the International Islamic University Malaysia:
Full time - minimum 2 yrs, normal 3 yrs, max 6 yrs
Part time- min 3 yrs, normal 6 yrs, max 8 yrs.

In the United States, the average time to earn a PhD for a full-time student is between 5 and 6 years. If you already have a Masters degree, the PhD can take only 4 additional years.
Part-time would take 7 or 8 years. Some universities have a Maximum time limit of 7 years.
