Some believe that creativity and innovation are different expressions of the same meaning. This is not true, but both are important, especially in business and institutions. The traditional and old methods are no longer useful. There must be innovative alternatives for the development and advancement of the institution, and ensuring its survival and continuity to be effective and competitive in its field. , And became creative human energies more important than the working energies only.
I think that creativity is just one of the paths for idea making. idea making itself, is a sub-activity for the innovation as an upper level activity. Othe sub-activities are design and development, implementation, production, commercialization, after sales services, etc.
There is a great overlap between the two concepts but in general and as many researchers see it Creative ideas can come from individuals, but innovation often comes through incubated institutions and organizations for those creative ideas.
creativity is about creation. It’s about harnessing the power of the mind to conceive new ideas, products plans, thought experiments, tastes, sensations or art. Creativity can be a form of expression or a way of solving problems. Anyone can be creative, and in any context. There's creativity in the marketing department, just as there can be creativity on a football pitch.
Creativity has traditionally been left to those ‘wacky’ companies that are deliberately trying to do things differently, with the majority of businesses tending to favour a traditional and monotone approach to running their organisations.
Innovation, on the other hand, needs stability and establishment. It’s about changing a common or long-standing process by improving it. It’s only by having a status quo in existence, that you can develop it in order to innovate.
Innovation is about taking newly created ideas and developing them into something useful and practical. In many ways, innovation is the process of converting theory into action.
Here's an example of my creativity and innovation. Students ask for extensions (80% of them) for submitting their final master's thesis, so I thought of providing online research support one month before the deadline to do the following: answer questions about their research, providing guidance on making requested supervisor revisions, and assist with links to related literature on their research topic. The latter was to reduce the lags in meeting this deadline. The innovation from this creative initiative was called Research e-Clinics. This link gives an idea of its implementation and results:

Creativity is finding new ways to do things. Inovation is choosing a type of change that is helpful in achieving objectives.
Creativity : form of expression (Art etc etc)
Innovate: Socioeconomic model for betterment of quality of life
Create first and then you can innovate. both of them are seen as a chain of evolution.
The online dictionary gives the following definitions:
_____
Creativity:
- the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.
Innovation:
- the action or process of innovating.
- a new method, idea, product, etc.
_____
'Creativity' is basically a human skill, whereas 'innovation' is essentially a human product. There are numerous domains where creative skills can be applied. The typical outcomes of 'creativity' are resulted in either new inventions or innovations. Inventions are necessarily ought to be registered and certified by national government patent offices and require two necessary elements:
reduction to concept - an original idea
and
reduction to practice - a path to practical implementation.
An innovation is not usually registered and certified, and it does not require necessarily an original idea, but it does require a desirably original practical implementation.
Virtually, those above show as to how 'creativity' and 'innovation' interrelate with each other.
All innovation is creativity, but not all creativity is innovation. Innovation entails doing something new and therefore creative. Creativity can occur in areas where one is not doing something new but is doing it differently than before. To illustrate, developing a new branch of mathematics is innovation. Discovering a new way to solve problems in an established branch of mathematics is creativity.
I agree with all the answers above, but the answers by Jerry Decker and Mohammad Aljaradin are axcellent answers. Best regards.
A writer's new good novel or a painter's new good painting can be considered as expression of creativity, a scientist's new discovery can be considered as innovation.
Am I right?
Hello,
Creativity and innovation are two sides of the same coin. The former is a mental construct which refers to using one's imaginative powers to create an idea of great excellence, whereas the latter is the concrete result of a plan or idea created by a creative mind. For instance, translation of a plan into a service or action can portray the relationship between creativity and innovation. In point of fact, creativity is a prerequisite to innovation.
Best regards,
R. Biria
Hi,
Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed. The created item may be intangible (such as an idea, a scientific theory, a musical composition, or a joke) or a physical object (such as an invention, a literary work, or a painting).
Scholarly interest in creativity involves many definitions and concepts pertaining to a number of disciplines: engineering, psychology, cognitive science, education, philosophy(particularly philosophy of science), technology, theology, sociology, linguistics, business studies, songwriting, and economics, covering the relations between creativity and general intelligence, mental and neurological processes, personality type and creative ability, creativity and mental health; the potential for fostering creativity through education and training, especially as augmented by technology; the maximization of creativity for national economic benefit, and the application of creative resources to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning.
Innovation is a general principle linked to the capabilities of a society or even of an individual entity distinct from it to create or find new solutions, which is reflected in particular in the fields of philosophy, sociology, agriculture, technical sciences and economics where it also applies to market micro-economic activities. Innovation also exists in the non-market sectors. It is social innovation that is the subject of a separate article to production, service and distribution companies dedicated to:
the placing on the world market of new or significantly improved novelties, products and services;
the adoption of innovation management within them, also based on changes and internal measures that improve their efficiency and effectiveness.
Understanding the concept of innovation implies that we clearly distinguish the concrete result (product, service, process, etc.) of the action to innovate, of the abstract process that makes it possible to achieve them.
An innovation is a social novelty, a new product, a new service or a new good that could be implemented. The field of appreciation of novelty can be done at the level of the economic actor (consumer or company for example) and / or at the level of the relevant market (geographic market or product market). The elements that one seeks to appreciate to materialize the novelty can be, for example, the appearance, the performances, the ergonomics, the power, the functionalities, etc.
Concretely, an innovation - it is something that, produced or reproduced in large numbers and successfully marketed or deployed for the first time, has improved, changed, modified, transformed or revolutionized a sector of activity, a social practice or the the lives of a large number of people, most often unexpectedly and unconsciously.
At the national level, given its importance, "industrial" scientific innovation is often seen as an indicator to be monitored and supported by public policy and a high-level government agency, ministry or state secretariat, and at the national level. monitored by the European Commission and the OECD.
At the level of the company, so-called "broad-based" innovation is schematically the responsibility of research and development, management strategy (process, marketing (new products and new products and services), manufacturing, logistics of training providers, etc. when they are done for the first time.
On the individual level, innovation is breaking with one's habits, doing something for the first time, or being the first to do it creatively. It is closer to creativity.
With my best regards!
Dr. Adel OUESLATI
Creativity is a mental property that enables the individual to think in unconventional ways. This property often leads to innovation, such as the use of unusual methods in dealing with a particular situation, the production of something new and unprecedented, or the unification or linking of a set of ideas apart in a new way familiar,or showing new unfamiliar uses of current ideas or a product.
Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed. The created item may be intangible (such as an idea, a scientific theory, a musical composition, or a joke) or a physical object (such as an invention, a literary work, or a painting).
Scholarly interest in creativity involves many definitions and concepts pertaining to a number of disciplines: engineering, psychology, cognitive science, education, philosophy (particularly philosophy of science), technology, theology, sociology, linguistics, business studies, songwriting, and economics, covering the relations between creativity and general intelligence, mental and neurological processes, personality type and creative ability, creativity and mental health; the potential for fostering creativity through education and training, especially as augmented by technology; the maximization of creativity for national economic benefit, and the application of creative resources to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning.
Innovation is often also viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs. This is accomplished through more-effective products, processes, services, technologies, or business models that are readily available to markets, governments and society. The term "innovation" can be defined as something original and more effective and, as a consequence, new, that "breaks into" the market or society. It is related to, but not the same as, invention, as innovation is more apt to involve the practical implementation of an invention (i.e. new/improved ability) to make a meaningful impact in the market or society, and not all innovations require an invention. Innovation is often manifested via the engineering process, when the problem being solved is of a technical or scientific nature. The opposite of innovation is exnovation.
While a novel device is often described as an innovation, in economics, management science, and other fields of practice and analysis, innovation is generally considered to be the result of a process that brings together various novel ideas in a way that they affect society. In industrial economics, innovations are created and found empirically from services to meet the growing consumer demand

What is creativity?
As the word suggests, creativity is about creation.
However, the changing business landscape means that companies are beginning to consider a more creative approach to working.
Why is creativity important?
Creativity can help a company manage tasks, improve staff performance and create quality products. It is also vital in fostering a likeable and aspirational company image. With consumers now able to get a snapshot of what company life is like, businesses need to be able to depict their inner culture in a way that makes it seem appealing.
As new technologies continue to develop and become available, companies have to be flexible and able to keep up to date. Creativity allows them to easily identify new ways in which technology can be applied to help their businesses. Likewise, with social media and other interactive forms of marketing now available, it’s never been more important for companies to be able to be creative.
Allowing employees to be more creative can inspire them to come up with more interesting ideas as well as improve their overall output. Many of the world’s leading companies have started to adopt unorthodox methods of encouraging maximum creativity from their employees, such as sleeping pods and flexible working areas.
What is innovation?
Innovation, on the other hand, needs stability and establishment. It’s about changing a common or long-standing process by improving it. It’s only by having a status quo in existence, that you can develop it in order to innovate. So, while creativity and innovation share strong links, the processes are entirely different.
Innovation is about taking newly created ideas and developing them into something useful and practical. In many ways, innovation is the process of converting theory into action.
The most common type of innovation is evolutionary, which means finding ways of making incremental improvements to your products and services. This type of innovation carries fewer risks, as it’s generally easier to establish demand for these improvements and to calculate the likely return on investment. However, it still requires a strategic, targeted approach – there’s little point in improving a product in a way that customers don’t value.
The best way to identify opportunities for evolutionary innovation is to talk to existing customers and find out what they value most about your products and services, and what aspects they’d like to see improved. If longer battery life is their number one priority, then it probably should be your number one target for innovation. However, if they also value the product’s easy portability, it’s probably not a good idea for your new version to be much larger or heavier.
Creativity and innovation in the workplace
Exploiting both creativity and innovation in business can boost performance and the bottom line. But first, you need to make space for both to happen.
Encouraging creativity can involve lots of different strategies, from enabling employees to work outside the office to letting people come into and leave the office when they feel ready to, not when they're expected to. The office itself needs to be creativity-friendly and there are ways you can adapt the working environment to support employees' talents.
It's important to let staff feel free when exploring new ideas – whether it's tweaking your existing product or developing a whole new concept. Involve the team, share accountability, reward good work and be ready to respond to market feedback. Remember, your ideas and innovation, no matter how amazing, still need to fulfil a need among customers.

Creativity:
Innovation:
The way I see, innovation is an output of a knowledge accumulation process which requires a cluster of special skills and assets to be performed and delivered to the market, intellectual capital among them. Creativity is a natural capacity, such as insights, of "how to put things together" to come out with a brand-new stuff or problem-solving.
The main difference between creativity and innovation is the focus. Creativity is about unleashing the potential of the mind to conceive new ideas. Those concepts could manifest themselves in any number of ways, but most often, they become something we can see, hear, smell, touch, or taste. However, creative ideas can also be thought experiments within one person’s mind.

Regards,
Creativity has more to do with thought processes. We can all be 'creative' in our own way, only to find that the 'innovation' - the introduction of a new product or service, has already occurred. Since the definition of innovation is the introduction of a new product, service, or idea into the marketplace, I often tell clients: "If it is new to you, your family, your business, or your community, it may just be an innovation". With that said, innovators, early adapters, adapters, late adapters, and passersby, although people are defined in innovation as based on the community or environment you are in, you might just actually be the innovator of products and services that have been out for years.

Creativity is the characteristic of a person to generate new ideas, alternatives, solutions, and possibilities in a unique and different way.
Creativity is the ability to conceive something unpredictable, original and unique. It must be expressive, exciting and imaginative. It is the mirror of how beautifully a person can think in any given circumstance.
Innovation is an act of application of new ideas to which creates some value for the business organization, government, and society as well. Better and smarter way of doing anything is innovation. It could be the introduction of:

Simply stated, while creativity is the capability of imaginatively creating something original, innovation is the execution of something new (fresh). If I have the capacity to visualize as many new ideas possible on a particular topic that stands for creativity, however innovation comes when something gets done.
Creativity is about the quality of thinking new ideas, while innovation refers to the act of executing the creative ideas into practice.

Plain English again. In the olden days the comparison used to be between invention and innovation. I suppose I wouldn't get too riled up about distinguishing between creativity and invention, although I wouldn't allow much light between those two. Creativity/invention is coming up with new things or stuff. Innovation is the commercialization of invention.
...I happen to come by this question minutes ago, on a Friday evening when the weekend beckons. I read all of the answers and almost everyone was trying to explain the differences between creativity and innovation and perhaps provided the occasional glimpse of "invention".
Except for one person ( Debra Sharon Ferdinand-James) , no one gave an example of their own creativity or of their innovation. I think it would have been particularly useful to illustrate your response with examples of your own creativity and/ or innovation. The lady I mention above has done that showing a dose of creativity and an innovative solution to student problems.
If you are an academic, you should also illustrate your lectures or your teaching sessions with some real-world examples, preferably of your own, or one undertaken in cooperation with others. You could then speak of your own real experiences rather than reporting. That could inspire some students to embrace creative thinking and perhaps even come up with interesting solutions to some problem that they may or might have encountered.
That is my 2 cents... I see no point in putting here similar ideas as above. I hope no one takes offence.. this is a forum for discussion, disagreement, dissent or perhaps consensus.
Have a nice weekend!
The question should be - where does innovation come from? Innovation come from creativity. Without creativity there is no innovation. These go hand in hand. And similarly to Mohammad's answer, innovation leads to implementation. However, there are many ways to achieve creativity in the work place one of those is to have the creative minds from the different departments in your organization come together to focus on what you want to innovate, be it a service or product. Ask yourself this question - do we have a clear innovation strategy? Follow this model by Tidd and Bessant (2013) to make life easier - Search, Select, Implement and Capture.

There's a lot of confusion surrounding creativity and innovation. "Creative types," in particular, claim that creativity and innovation can't be measured. Performance, however, demands measurement so you can identify what success looks like. In a world that changes every two seconds, it's imperative that companies figure out the difference between creativity and innovation.
You better believe they're different.
Creativity vs. Innovation
The main difference between creativity and innovation is the focus. Creativity is about unleashing the potential of the mind to conceive new ideas. Those concepts could manifest themselves in any number of ways, but most often, they become something we can see, hear, smell, touch, or taste. However, creative ideas can also be thought experiments within one person's mind.
Creativity is subjective, making it hard to measure, as our creative friends assert.
Innovation, on the other hand, is completely measurable. Innovation is about introducing change into relatively stable systems. It's also concerned with the work required to make an idea viable. By identifying an unrecognized and unmet need, an organization can use innovation to apply its creative resources to design an appropriate solution and reap a return on its investment.

Innovation has nothing to do with how many R amp&; D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R & D. It's not about money. It's about the people you have, how you're led, and how much you get it.

The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists.

Innovation refers to the new ideas, new ways of looking at things, new techniques/products/service of value. Creativity, however, is an active process necessarily involved in innovation.
