We all think we know what murder is, and I think this definition is used consistently in TV crime and murder drama, for example. However, I think the word as used in the UK and USA laws and legal system has no common definition, and in fact has totally contradictory definitions, and is therefore worse than meaningless. If we execute people for murder, or imprison them for life, it is only fair that we explicitly and clearly define the crime for which they are punished. If, on the other hand, we wish to offer the chance of redemption or rehabilitation, it is even more important that people are quite clear as to how they have broken the law, and that the legal system has not mischaracterised, mislabelled or misunderstood their crime.

Surely it is essential to show intent?
