For interface elements in Plaxis 2019, the user is given a choice to choose between default stiffness values or to enter the values manually. The default values are not displayed. How can one calculate these default values?
The default values can be computed according to (after some simplifications of the expressions in Plaxis manual):
Tangential stiffness : Ks=G/t × (Rinter)2,
Normal stiffness : Kn=11× Kt
Where,
G is the shear modulus of the interface material,
Rinter is interface strength reduction factor
t is a virtual interface thickness equal to t = (Virtual Thickness Factor) × (Target element size)
The default value of virtual thickness factor is 0.1 but it can be set in the Plaxis Structures Tab as shown in attached image. Target element size can also be found from mesh options dialogue box as shown in attached image.
Mr.Mustafa, as per my experience in using PLAXIS software, the interface is simulated automatically while using structural element and interface properties to be defined indirectly in terms of interface factor 'Rf' . we have only option to assign Rf factor to define the interface behaviour. PLAXIS does not give an option to enter normal and tangential stiffness to define the interface properties. Now, i too like to know how to assign interface properties in terms of normal and tangential stiffness in PLAXIS..all the best..
