As I understand it, all aquatic physid gastropods in Europe (apart from Aplexa and Bulinus) are considered to be in Genus: Physa. The taxonomy and distribution of the native species (P. fontinalis) is clear, but we also have two North American species (P. acuta and P.gyrina). These were, for a while, placed in G: Physella. Firstly, is the lumping together into G: Physa with P. fontinalis taxonomically correct and fully justified for these two and secondly, is P. gyrina a valid species? It is currently known only from Britain & Ireland and there still seems to be debate over whether it is just a variant on P. acuta. Any opinions/evidence would be helpful.
