I want to check the nature of flow in the shell side of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Hence I need to know the characteristic length of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger to calculate the Rayleigh Number.
I am attaching a file for clarity on my question. The file contains the characteristic length of an annular configuration.
It can be understood by intuition that gases can't be compressed at constant pressure or constant volume. But what is the thermodynamic reason behind it?
