if it is possible I would do first extraction of DNA from a fresh tissue and then store DNA in -80°C.
Thank you, Marcela. I should have specified that they need to be shipped to the lab, so several days of lag time is necessary before DNA can be extracted. My sense is that frozen tissue is better than EtOH preserved for very high molecular weight DNA, but not sure about RNAlater or other methods.
I found this paper. It is not about tissue but the issue is the same. They also use RNA later for DNA.

And I agree with you. I would prefer freezing before EtOH. But RNA later seems to be also fine. We used RNA later for transport of biopsy samples but for RNA extraction.
