This topic interests me particularly because I want to create a project that has to do with the rearing of wild rabbit. Aiming a few years can evolve in this field of hunting , thereby promoting high quality animals for restocking.
Wild rabbits are very nervous and it is extremely difficult to raise them at great scale. The best way is to work with animals that has been pets as breeding males and females (confiscations, donations, etc.) to avoid undesirable effects of stress under captivity. If you are planning to use the animals to repopulate the environment, you need to raise them in very natural conditions, avoiding the contact with humans and other species (cats, dogs). They need to learn to identify predators, to identify natural sources of food, and how to find shelter. There is difficult to find a balance between the husbandry of breeders (used to human contact) and their offspring (as wild as possible).
Wild rabbits (Sylvilagus) are natural carriers of mixomatosis and they can express it due to stress. Then, you need to provide the best enclosures and husbandry as possible.
