I have around 4000 manuscript PDFs on my mac. For many years I used 'Papers' developed by Mekentosj to organize the library, with the PDFs neatly organized into folders. Sadly over time as Papers transitioned from Papers 2 and then to Papers 3 , the software became less good and more buggy (and much more expensive). My recent experiences with ReadCube (effectively Papers 4) are not so positive.
What software do others recommend? Ideally I should like to export all the PDFs within their folders into a new platform

You can combine PDF files, split a larger PDF into single or multi-page documents, reorder pages, create outlines, add pages, remove pages, and more. Just open the Organize toolbar by choosing Tools > Organize or clicking the Common Tools toolbar, and choosing Organize.
