Hi. I would like to use this platform to ask question regarding the alternative dyes which can be used for solvent polarity testing. So far I came across Nile red (NR) which commonly used for solvent polarity testing. Is there any other dyes that can be used? May be Sudan red III, IV etc.since they also can stain the lipid droplets.
If you want a colorant that is highly solvatochromic (i.e. its colour is very sensitive to solvent polarity), then something like Reichardt's dye could be a good choice - it is available from some lab reagent suppliers like Sigma-Aldrich (cat no. 272442).
