Whenever you are looking for an animal models, please search LAMHDI, the initiative to Link Animal Models to Human DIsease. http://www.lamhdi.org/ For example:
If you search for "lung cancer"- you can further filter your results by mice just by clicking n the link ( "lung cancer" ) species:mouse
Interestingly, I could not find any lung cancer models for rat on this database
We used by the past the human A549 non-small-cell lung cancer model orthotopically grafted into immunocompromized mice. This model is biologically aggressive and "mimic relatively well" the "clinical situation". Orthotopic grafting are better than s.c. ones because the tumor microenvironments are very different in the skin and in the lung.
However, we are also using this kind of models s.c. for certain type of experiments.
See the attached articles.
Whatever it can be, you must never forget that a model is a model and nothing else. It is a tool to validate more or less strongly a scientific hypothesis, but it will never "represents" the clinical reality.
