What is your opinion about research attitude? Around the world in some institutions research is imposed on students, 'IMPOSED' because they don't have research attitude. Now the question arises: Should research be compulsory or attitude based?
Research attitude is very important. It is better the Scholar also makes a self-assessment of his attitude & aptitude for research, before taking up research.
A self-administered questionnaire was distributed among senior medical students to explore perceptions, attitudes and practices toward research among them. One hundred and seventy two students participated in the study, with 97 males (65.5%). The majority of the students agreed that research is important in the medical field (97.1%, 167/172). A total of 67.4% (116/172) believed that conducting research should be mandatory for all medical students. The obstacles that prevented the students from conducting research included lack of professional supervisors, lack of training courses, lack of time and lack of funding. Although the majority of students believe that research is important in the medical field, only around half of the students participated in research during medical school.
Best is to ask what « research » is in Science. Many Institutions do not know what research is. We could mention hundreds of “research programs” with no scientific value. Research as also innovation, is becoming a lifestyle in the Universities & Institutions & private sector & administration to justify existence, positions…and turnover of money....
We have to learn the students to develop research attitude, mainly by involving them in our personal research. The question is our research with scientific value.
Research attitude is a conditio sine qua non in conducting individual research projects. In the research team it is enough that such an attitude will be presented by the leader of the project, which will share / impose tasks to other team members - eg. students among which only a few are prepared for independent research activity and present a research attitude right from the first semesters of studies. So should be considered a compulsory participation in research for the (important) component of academic education and awakening / development of a research attitude among students.
For individuals who work in institutions/departments that are supposed to be at the forefront of knowledge acquisition, research is a compulsory part of the job, there is no other option; otherwise, it will be similar to joining an army infantry and then asking if fighting is optional.
I am in the Biological Science field. From my experience, except equipping with book knowledge, it is better to have hands-on experience in a specific subject. For example, the feeling is different between when you read DNA structure in the book than when you actually see the DNA with your naked eyes. It is also different when you see a printed cotton plant in a book than you actually grow and study them in the field yourself. That is why a lot of required courses are offered with a hands-on lab class in many universities and colleges.
One can never become a good driver if he/she only read DMV handbooks and driver's manuals and without actually getting into a car. One can never becomes a good chef if he/she only read cookbooks without going into a kitchen. Similarly, one will never become a good plant breeder if he/she has never gone into fields to work on plants.
Every man does some research in his/her life. But it is not included in scholarly research. Students in higher classes should also have some research abilities. It should be a part of learning-teaching process. However, it should have limited evaluation marks. Students should be taught in such a method that they could be creative and curious. Only inclusion of researches in studies is not enough.
I agree with @ Vassilis Doucas that researches should be productive in nature. Only doing for passing an examination, can not develop an individual to be a good researcher. I also agree with @ Aristidis Matsoukis that there should be research facilities in the institutions.
agreed with you... but the institutions engaged in doing research in quantity .... in number but not in quality.......
i have 7 years of experience as a researcher....and i experience that most of the researches that i came across in this period are fake...because of lack of ethics in research ...and we can say without research attitude.....
Dear Gouravjeet, honesty is indispensable in every area of human lives and naturally also in research and in transmission of knowledge. The problem and danger comes when dishonest people reach important positions and behave as despots or mini despots, they use huge masks, they are disrespectful with the others because they are always afraid of truth, they make everything to distort the reality, and they try to make people believe that everybody is dishonest like them. Fortunately there are many honest and competent persons in this world, everyone can see. A person with experience in the area of Education, for example, is able to see this clearly, even in the way how the persons do their questions and their answers here on RG.
I feel blessed with my students and their attitude since more than thirty years ago. They and their intelligence is really the best that our Universities have.
Some of the students possess research attitude naturally, but this is no the thing, which can't develop. Any concentrated effort of the teacher may motivate the students to do research.
Generally, every child born with the research attitude. From the early childhood he tries to no everything and remains curious, but unfortunately, elders discourage his queries, resultantly, he loses his curiosity. The attitude can be redeveloped through giving him proper opportunity to the students.
"Research attitude", that's an interesting phrase. One thing that geologists surely posess is the interest in the way our planet works and things like the rock-cycle works. This intrinsic interest is not equal to recearch. As I have said above, paraphrasing learned people, you must have discovered a problem that must be solved before research can begin. Merely describing rocks, strata and mountains is not research. Your attitude towards research should be how can I solve a problem that can give us new knowlege. The attitude must be a passion to do so.
Absolutely, I subscribe to the view expressed by Rudolph that the starting point of research is the identification of an existing problem and a passion in the prospective researcher to find a solution to that problem.
