Research should be for the sake of humanity. Our research results should be applied. Research is not a goal itself. Today, we do have many unethical practices in publishing domain, regarding plagiarism, fake co-authors, fake data, fake results,...! Research results must be shared and published.

@Gouravjeet, I believe that we are all intrinsically motivated as well as extrinsically motivated. So research is for the sake of research and our natural curiosity is fulfilled. My research is also for the improvement of my students' learning, otherwise I would not be a helpful teacher, so RESEARCH is for the sake of getting some goal, and that contributes to what I can do for my society and my community. And in return I get a job. But if RESEARCH is for the sake of publishing, I cannot leave out research ethics, because each journal requires that I conform to the standard ethical practices.

You have posed a very interesting question. The slogan "publish, or perish" has had a long time presence in the Western Academics. Clearly, teaching positions are consolidated through the bulk of research produced by the academicians. The scenario, in the East, is not much different. It seems that the aggressive competition among states and other unjustified forms of struggle has diminished the value of research for the sake of research.

I thank you for your question because really it is time to discuss this topic seriously. It seems that we are really faced with a problem of reforming the notion "Research for the sake research as thing-in- itself". Therefore I support completely your phrase "It is not for the sake of social or human development but for acquiring a degree". In my view, today's Research Community is in most cases the latent form of unemployment. My proposition is the following:
(a) Transform the notion "Research for the sake Research" to the notion "Hobby"
(b) Transform the notion "Researcher" to the notion "Researcher-Developer" or "Developer"

Yes Ljubomir, you are right. But there are also unethical researchers and predator journals and publishers, for whom research is not for the sake of research. They can come along and sidetrack serious readers like us if we read their papers, and fall into errors. This would mean a waste of time and effort. Beall can warn us to some extent, but it's still a hazard because it's not every paper in a 'predator journal' that is 'bad science'. At times, we wonder if what we read is truthfully reported. If research is not for the sake of research, we are all more vulnerable.

Limiting time to produce research outcome is key factor in reducing quality of research. On the other hand, no bound on time for quality research cannot be as per government plan. Satisfying the both is very difficult at the same condition.
In my opinion, research planner should be highly experienced researcher not an elected person who is not having any idea about research.
Basically, political interference in the research is degrading its importance and quality.

you iniciated a new sub-question about "Corruption in Research". Let's we re-phrase this sub-question in the following way: Can there be any "Corruption in Development" ? In my opinion, the chance is very small. If this premise contains a grain of truth then we must re-consider our point of view about Research. My proposition is the following: The main thing must become only DEVELOPMENT, any RESEARCH must be inside the development and fully incorporated into the development. Thus, Development and Research must become as one whole "Development & Research". Now, let's image: there are a Journal that takes only papers about the Developments. I want to ask: How do you think whether the reviewers need? My answer would be NO. Why? Therefore the Development is the DEVELOPMENT in any point of the world. Any Development can be checked and evaluated by all people worldwide. If this is the case in reality then "Why do you need any reviews ?". Here the case where the main reviwer will become people's voice. That's why here any corruption would be IMPOSSIBLE. Developments can be like: Devices, Functional Sites (Online Tools), and so on. The next logical step must be passage from DEVELOPMENT to INNOVATION.
Fundamental research should be curiosity driven, and only the 'unpredictable' future will determine its link with possible short-term or long-term application.

As far as is possible try and involve all team members in the planning and execution of research projects, and they should recognise that their obligations may not end with the completion of their fieldwork or research project, because research follows various iterations along with scope for improvement.
Research should be twofold it should result in you achieving your degree yes but it should be relevant and noteworthy in that it should seek to improve or change ideas in the world for the good of humanity and those who are in poverty. Research should make a difference question theories by bringing new areas of thought to issues that are relevant to society and on the World stage. Researchers should be change makers striving to show people their is another way to do things that will help and encourage growth . Topics for research should be valuable and change worthy so that they impact on all of us make us think challenge us question our goals and make us look outside of the box for the answers to what life is all about.
Even in academia, research has to be funded by someone, right? I have no doubt that the most immediate, short term goal for students is research to earn their degree, and a similarly short-term goal for professors is research to become tenured, in academia. However, someone is footing that bill, so that should tend to keep things honest. In industry too, research won't remain funded too long, if the payoff isn't there.
So research just for the sake of research should be a self-regulating problem, I think.
But even for research that seems very pointless, some good should come of it anyway. If for no other reason, some student is being taught how to do research, is getting an education in the process, and may then go on to do something spectacular.
Unfortunately, I believe that research has become just for the sake of research or prestige or to complete some requirement. If research were truly valued I believe a system of capturing the data, making it applicable and beneficial to society by building action teams would be built into the research design rather sending knowledge and wisdom to the dusty archives.
Whether basic, applied or strategic, a research needs to be conducted to solve a particular problem. It participates different disciplines from its initiation to its implementation. In fact, the depth and type of research varies from countries to countries. For example, in most developing nations research is not carried out for the sake of research but to solve a very pressing issues that are relevant for improving the lives of people.

What makes people to carry out research? This is a question of fundamental importance. The possible reasons for doing research may be either one or more of the following:
- Curiosity is an intrinsic characteristic of human brain and a powerful drive in the exploration of man’s surrounding environment. The researchers undertake research to discover and understand the fact underlying a phenomenon. Accordingly, curiosity for the unknown is the fundamental stimulating element in social research.
- Science sits on the implicit and unshakable belief of man that all events have cause and that practically nothing can occur uncaused. Business research is mainly worried about determination of cause-effect patterns of business phenomenon and not just with thorough description of it. Thus research for cause is another basic motivating element in research.
- Research makes use of quite a few techniques to examine various problems. The effectiveness of a technique is primarily responsible for fast and trustworthy results in any research. More sophisticated a technique, better are the outcomes by its use. In addition, certain problems can’t be studied unless appropriate methods are designed. As a result, a scientist is keenly interested in analyzing the existing techniques of research and making continuous advancement in them. Accordingly refinement of techniques is another reason for conducting research.
- A lot of events take place in the life of people, modern society and business that are unexpected and unforeseen and don’t easily fit into any known causation pattern. This kind of instances are highly stimulating for researchers to uncover the real nature of these facts and find out whether these can be made to fit in the accepted laws of causation or if not, do these demand customization of our laws. Accordingly an out of the ordinary happening encourages research.

I performed research mainly in response to an issue that came up in my work.
If after conducting a literature search, I found the question unanswered, I tried to get funding to explore the matter, and when I did, then researched the matter.
L'art pour l'art - la science pour la science?
Basic research should be free constraints in any way, driven only by the curiosity of the researchers, then we will get the best results!
Of course the results should help the world and mankind, but often it is not predictable what benefit it will bring and on the other side who will use the results in a bad manner.
The results should be in ideal open for everybody, even if they are not as predicted and even if there are NO results.
Human A with mental state A develops research product A, while human population X with average mental state X uses research product A, so that research product A becomes beyond the control of human A. Imagine the (long-term) consequences for the environment, for instance.
Example:
Applied research: The costs and benefits of 'plastic' for the humanities and the animalities!
The best science with a high level in ethic control, best scientific standards and open for everybody can lead to a disaster when "population x" uses the results? Should we stop science? Should we increase science to handle population x?
Just start it. If you do a good job in order to conquer a degree you will fall in love with the theme and the diploma will not be your final goal anymore. Money and position, soon will not be an issue. So true, many researchers who dive deep into their work do not make much money and not always hold the best positions in leading companies throughout the world.
In case researches were conducted in true scientific manner, then I can consider the results of these researches as ongoing charity work. Because multiple generations can take the benefits or build from them. Even if the research came with negative results or the purpose of conducting research was for promotion or other things.

Ideally, research must be done for the sake of people based on the idea that science should be devoted mostly toward solving some of community's /nation's/world's problems. bearing in mind that we see the value of basic research in a long run.
Research ethics and honesty in doing all parts of research project is a must!.
Alfred Nobel developed dynamit. The reason was, that the time before many people died in handling Nitroglycerine (e.g. in transport). With dynamite this was disabled, but people had the chance to develop all the deathly weapons we all know.
Was Alfred Nobel a scientist with ethic responsability? Did or could he think out all consequences?
I think research should add something new to our knowledge, regardless its effect, it should add new fact, after that it will be people's responsibility how to deal with that fact, many drugs developed can be curative and at the same time may be fatal if we disuse them....

RESEARCH is for the sake of RESEARCH IN MEDICINE.
Research is clearly very important for the advancement of psychiatry or for any other specialty for that matter. It is also important that trainees be encouraged to do research work. But does every single trainee have to do research work? Not everybody has the same aptitudes and interests; research for the sake of research is not very helpful. Some trainees are more interested in being good clinicians or have other special interests. For example, a special interest in psychotherapy should be given the same weight age as one in research.
Agreed to all .....the thing is...The whole World is based on research.. every aspect of life is related to research.. inspite of that some of my friends are engaged in developing fake results and conclusions..I wonder what we are delivering to the next generations..
