Integrity, morality and ethics are widely understood to provide standards of ‘correct’ behavior. How do you define these phenomenon? How do you differentiate between them?
Integrity is about the state of being whole, entire, or undiminished, honest and trustworthy. It is the virtue of adherence to moral and ethical principles, soundness of moral character and doing what is right without thinking of consequences.
Dear Mahmoud,
I agree with Barbara. Intgrity is key value in various dimensions of life. For example integrity in professional, academic work is referred to the researches or teaching ethical standards.
Integrity is about the state of being whole, entire, or undiminished, honest and trustworthy. It is the virtue of adherence to moral and ethical principles, soundness of moral character and doing what is right without thinking of consequences.
Integrity has to do with the 'promise keeping' virtue: If you insist on what you have promised beside the difficulties that you face and manage to go until the finish, then, yes you have integrity.
Dear All,
Thank you for interesting answers. Based on you answer we may say integrity is a purely positive phenomenon. It has nothing to do with good vs. bad, right vs. wrong behavior, whereas other terms (morality and ethics) are normative concepts in that they deal with matters of good or bad, right vs. wrong, etc..
Dear Mahmoud Omid ; As per definition Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.
It is a personal choice, an uncompromising and predictably consistent commitment to honor moral, ethical, spiritual and artistic values and principles. Thanks
Simply put, dear Mahmoud, integrity is, in my view, observance of morality, righteousness, honesty and congruence in what we think, believe, say and do.
Integrity is adherence to "sublime" principles & values (from which there is no deviation whatever the pressures are). Morality is a personal attribute which is related to good reasonable conduct. Ethics are the rules of positive attitudes abode by an individual or a group or a society as a whole.
As «Integral» means Whole, so Integrity should mean all virtues as the integrating character of one person.
Although it is dificult to get, it should be a goal to obtain...
To answer dear Nizar's great definition, I should not resist adding, Samuel Johnson's berautiful quote:
«Întegrity without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful»
So, I'll have to keep on learning, to become a better decent person as is my goal !
Let me explain (re-define) my question with providing some basic definitions for these three terms first:
Ethics: In a given group, ethics is the agreed upon standards of what is desirable and undesirable; of right and wrong conduct; of what is considered by that group as good and bad behavior of a person, group or entity that is a member of the group, and may include defined bases for discipline, including exclusion.
Integrity: A state or condition of being whole, complete, unbroken, unimpaired, sound, in perfect condition.
Morality: In a given society, in a given era of that society, morality is the generally-accepted standards of what is desirable and undesirable; of right and wrong conduct, and what is considered by that society as good or bad behavior of a person, group or entity.
Now comes the main question: How do you differentiate between these terms?
Looking in internet one can find something like:
The state of being whole and undivided (remember "integration"!) and having the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.
Ethics is the science of morals or morality. Morality means the principles of goodness. Integrity in standard English means honesty. An individual with integrity is high-moraled by virtue of his forthrightness. And he displays a sense of ethics, or regard for the moral measure of his conduct.
Integrity is the the ability of a person to not violate principles and values that form their moral self by acting in an unethical manner.
Each person, through experience and introspection, arrives at considered judgements of what is, and isn't, acceptable moral behavior. These principles are the morals that define "good" or "bad" for an individual. If you are a deontologist and think that moral principles are absolutely mandated, than moral values act as a universal laws, applied to everyone in all situations, without exception. Or if you have a more utilitarian bent, than morality is defined using the greatest happiness principle- if an action produces more pleasure/happiness/benefit than harm, than the action is "good" regardless of what the action is. How one decides what these definitions of "good" and "evil" are is beyond the scope of this comment.
Ethics are the systematic application of these moral principles. How ethics are structured and put into practice varies greatly, ranging from casuistical approaches, Kantian matrixes of perfect and imperfect duties, consequentialist calculus, value ethics, and more.
I follow the definition of the terms as provided by @Nelson. So, 'Integrity' is honoring your word and hence it is a purely positive phenomenon. Integrity has nothing to do with good vs. bad, right vs. wrong behavior. but both morality and ethics relate to desirable vs. undesirable behavior.
I think if you follow the the Four Way test, it will give you the answer required
Dear Anup, The 4-way test you mentioned can stir bitter conflict for those who try to balance integrity and ambition.
“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” C.S. Lewis
Integrity is also defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.
It is when you never appear with only part of your personality.
When we do speak about integrity, we can not avoid leaders! They are men of integrity! " It is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcomes. It connotes a deep commitment to do the right thing for the right reason, regardless of the circumstances. People who live with integrity are incorruptible and incapable of breaking the trust of those who have confided in them. Every human is born with a conscience and therefore the ability to know right from wrong. Choosing the right, regardless of the consequence, is the hallmark of integrity."
http://leadonpurposeblog.com/2012/01/21/leadership-and-integrity/
@Mahmoud and all, Mahmoud has defined the 3 areas well. Here is a pic to represent the difference between ethics and morality. But for integrity, we must integrate, 'bring together' the practice of morality (simply, right conduct) in the light of ethics (simply, rules to ensure right conduct), to have wholesomeness in speech and action. And this is simply said, but not easily done. But making errors doesn't mean that we give up. (The brief comment of Vilemar applies to integrity, right?)
Maybe we can draw an analogy between integrity and universal law. For example, consider law of gravity and the law of integrity. If a person attempts to violate the law of integrity you get hurt just as if you try to violate the law of gravity with no safety device. However, both morality and ethics deal with matters of good/ bad, right/ wrong. Specifically, morality refers to a society’s standards of right and wrong behavior for individuals and groups within that society, and ethics refers to the normative set of values that apply to all members of a group or organization.
Morality is the fact of being close to moral values from social interaction, ethics is the rules from honesty close to ones actions, decisions and their feed backs from professional or economic interactions. Integrity is the self behavior from high value of consciousness.
Too much of a good thing can be wonderful! As a token of my appreciation to all the participants in this discussion so far, I just add a quote on integrity:
Dwight D. Eisenhower: "The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office."
Integrity is a word many of us were not taught growing up. Yet it is the core of morality and justice – most of us did not need to define it with a word. Enjoy this brief collection of quotes on integrity and character.
Albert Einstein: “Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters”
Albert Einstein: “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.”
Spencer Johnson: “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.”

Dear friends, fine article about leaders' integrity Why Does Leader Integrity Matter to Followers? It is relevant one and it deserve to be here! The authors begin by defining "...leader integrity to include both the leader’s word/deed consistency and the consistency between the leader’s values and the follower’s values...."

Dear Ljubomir, Thank you for the comment and useful new link in this thread. A key aspect of integrity involves the relationship one has with oneself whether s/he be a leader or ordinary person. Unfortunately, for most of us (people, organizations, leaders, etc.), integrity exists as a virtue rather than as a necessary condition for performance.
You are very right dear @Vasile, " there is no difference between a leader and an "ordinary" people"! Professor, Prostitute, Manager, Politician, Engineer..., never mind the profession, we look for someone's integrity!
Here is the example about Pope and Philippines: Pope Calls Out Philippines on Corruption and ‘Scandalous’ Inequality! "He added that “it is now, more than ever, necessary that political leaders be outstanding for honesty, integrity and commitment to the common good” and asked Filipinos “to hear the voice of the poor.” Injustice and oppression, he said, had given rise to “glaring, and indeed scandalous, social inequalities.”"
Integrity is always needed where corruption is present!
http://time.com/3671080/pope-francis-philippines-corruption-poverty/
Dِear @Ljubomir and @Vasile, Your words " there is no difference between a leader and an "ordinary" people" is the same as I said already:"whether s/he be a leader or ordinary person". So we said the same thing. Thank you.
After Vasile post,
it seems that the concept of "integrity" is not absolute! There should be different "integrities" between "gangsters" "priests" "politicians", "scientists" etc. The code of ethics varies.
Integrity is the characteristic of behaving and thinking congruently with one’s personal values and beliefs. It is about doing what you believe to be right, irrespective of the costs, downside, hardships involved.
“Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.
“Living with integrity means: Not settling for less than what you know you deserve in your relationships. Asking for what you want and need from others. Speaking your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. Behaving in ways that are in harmony with your personal values. Making choices based on what you believe, and not what others believe.” ― Barbara De Angelis
Dear Costas, Integrity means having a set of values and sticking to them, no matter what! So it is absolute.
Dear Mahmoud,
Gangsters, have their own values and they are sticking to them no matter what! The absolute sense you have in mind is coming out of a single believe in certain values!
There are some types of man in Greece and other countries called "μάγκας" in Greek, Chappie, corker, buster, etc. These people have really an integrity and austere codes.
Stand up, good Canterbury;
Thy truth and thy integrity is rooted
In us, thy friend.
(William Shakespeare)
Dear Costas. I got your point. But here we are interested in only rules, laws and codes in the universe for very good reason. Whom you mentioned are at odds.
Academic Integrity example,
The Academic Integrity (AI) Office promotes and supports a culture of academic integrity in order to reinforce quality teaching and learning at UC San Diego.the UCSD Policy on Integrity of Scholarship sets out:
Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.
The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.
Bob Marley
Achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of your life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values.

To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity. Douglas Adams
We learned about honesty and integrity - that the truth matters... that you don't take shortcuts or play by your own set of rules... and success doesn't count unless you earn it fair and square.
Michelle Obama
Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not.

Perhaps the surest test of an individual's integrity is his refusal to do or say anything that would damage his self-respect.
Thomas S. Monson
Honesty and integrity are absolutely essential for success in life - all areas of life. The really good news is that anyone can develop both honesty and integrity.
Zig Ziglar
One of the truest tests of integrity is its blunt refusal to be compromised.
Chinua Achebe
If you don't have integrity, you have nothing. You can't buy it. You can have all the money in the world, but if you are not a moral and ethical person, you really have nothing.
Henry Kravis
Integrity is not a conditional word. It doesn't blow in the wind or change with the weather. It is your inner image of yourself, and if you look in there and see a man who won't cheat, then you know he never will.
John D. MacDonald
The greatest asset, even in this country, is not oil and gas. It's integrity. Everyone is searching for it, asking, 'Who can I do business with that I can trust?'
George Foreman
The integrity definitely expresses some values, but it is implied, it means to be whole and authentic and values are put into practice directly with actions, not stick to the rules that come from above. Integrity is the result of an inner state, as such should be researched and tested. The term "integrity" comes from intact.
Healthy means that it has never been touched, that nothing is missing.
The space of integrity opens us to the leadership of ourselves: harmony but also acceptance of our history, of all parties: weak, strong, talented and limiting.
Fabio Sgubbi
Dear Lerardi. Thank you for your comment. Your definition of integrity as “what it takes for a person to be whole and complete is very good. But when s/he is whole and complete? The answer would be when her/his word is whole and complete, and her/his word is whole and complete when s/he honors her/his word.
In a brief, not let any body step on your back for mutual business benefits. It is to Raise values versus interests.
The three terms Integrity, morality and ethics in my question can lead to a positive model. For instance, Recently Werner Erhard et al. (2014) presented a positive model of integrity that provides powerful access to increased performance for individuals, groups, organizations, and societies.
Werner Erhard, Michael C. Jensen and Steve Zaffron (2014) Integrity: A Positive Model that Incorporates the Normative Phenomena of Morality, Ethics, and Legality.

Integrity binds human minds avoiding any invisible hindrance.
The Four Agreements:
1. Be Impeccable With Your Word
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Two quotes by great persons;-

This is where legal ethics comes in. A commitment to legal ethics involves a commitment to the introduction of Codes of Ethics or Standards of Professional Practice. An example is the standards reflected in the International Bar Association General Principles of Ethics.
Dear Krishnan. Thank you for good input. It is true that an organization’s success depends on the integrity of its employees.
The following link defines ethics and integrity in a way people can understand and immediately use:
Ethics + Integrity = Alignment (Inside & Out)
Ethics: is an external system of rules and laws. Usually there are rewards when we follow the rules and punishments when we break them. A professional board or committee often monitors compliance. Many organizations have developed a code of ethics that employees are expected to obey.
Integrity: is an internal system of principles which guides our behavior. The rewards are intrinsic. Integrity is a choice rather than an obligation. Even though influenced by upbringing and exposure, integrity cannot be forced by outside sources. Integrity conveys a sense of wholeness and strength. When we are acting with integrity we do what is right - even when no one is watching.

The Importance of Integrity in Our Daily Life!
Success will come and go, but integrity is forever.
We live in a world where “the end justifies the means” has become an acceptable school of thought for far too many. Sales people overpromise and under deliver, all in the name of making their quota for the month. Applicants exaggerate in job interviews because they desperately need a job. CEOs overstate their projected earnings because they don’t want the board of directors to replace them. Entrepreneurs overstate their pro formas because they want the highest valuation possible from an investor. Investors understate a company’s value in order to negotiate a lower valuation in a deal. Customer service representatives cover up a mistake they made because they are afraid the client will leave them.
The following comments in Forbes is a good follow up:

Integrity is a value, like persistence, courage, and intelligence. Integrity is the foundation of character.
The Universal Law of Attraction says that you inevitably attract into your life the people and circumstances that are in harmony with your dominant thoughts and values. This means that everything in your life you have attracted, because of the person you are. If there is anything in your life, your relationships, or your work that you are not happy with, you need to begin changing the person you are, so that you stop attracting those people and situations into your life.
Your integrity is manifested in your willingness to adhere to the values that are most important to your.

My dear @Mahmoud, INTEGRITY could be presented in the following way, like VENN's diagram! Fine blog about this issue of Integrity! "Integrity means filtering our choices through some hard questions: Is my action best for my client, my student, my patient, my co-workers, my company – or is it only best for me? Are my actions based on anger or fear? Am I being defensive because I feel hurt, criticized, or threatened? Am I rationalizing?"
http://mettahu.blogspot.com/2013/10/universal-spiritual-principles-for_8.html
Dear @Ljubomir, Thank you for your latest comment and link about "integrity". It is both thoughtful and colorful. I wish I could be more rational.
A popular saying, “Our walk must match our talk”. For one to live with integrity necessitates that one conduct himself in an authentic manner. Integrity is a life of consistency and sincerity, with no deception or pretence. Integrity is not only about authenticity and truth-telling; it is also about convictions. A person of integrity stands for what is right. One cannot be a person of integrity without deep convictions. They know what they believe and why. Convictions are not forced on an individual; they are beliefs and actions of choice.
The first step towards integrity is being honest with yourself. Be who are. Say what you mean. Do what you say you will do. Don’t just walk the walk; talk the talk.

10 Ways to Be a Man of Integrity
One of the best definitions of character we’ve ever heard goes something like this: “Character is what you do when no one else is looking.”
Here are some suggestions that will help once we decide to make integrity a foundational value:
1. Root yourself in a moral foundation.
2. Look for the positive.
3. Resist the temptation to compartmentalize your life.
4. Determine to live for others ahead of yourself.
5. Participate in an active accountability group.
6. Partner with a friend where you need to make progress.
7. Be in the habit of sharing everything with your wife.
8. Practice the habit of imagining the presence of someone whose opinion you value.
9. Hold your children accountable.
10. Incorporate a “principle of the week.”
These are explained in the following link.

To UNESCO, "integrity is learning to live together in peace and harmony" and learning to be.
Thank you @Irina for the UNESCO quote. But when the world will be at peace and harmony? How to create and sustain global peace and harmony for more than one day! Maybe it is just a sweet dream or maybe the answer should be when each one of us to experience peace as individuals.

One, who behave consistently and exercise moral values, reliability, and trustworthiness as one's virtuous guiding principles, can rightfully be described as a person of integrity.
Dear Vasile. Integrity refers to a wholeness of character demonstrated by consistency between thoughts, words and actions. So integrity may be defined as consistency of words and actions. Furthermore, remember that integrity compares ones's behavior to his/her own rules and self-definition. If our behaviors are always consistent with our belief system, then we are acting with integrity.
@Vasile - Virtuous guiding principles conform to moral and ethical principles, morally excellent and upright. A virtuous person’s thoughts should be wholly directed to all that is true, all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure, admirable, decent, virtuous or worthy of praise. Virtue is a habit or firm disposition which inclines a person to do good and avoid evil. Characterized by stability, a virtuous person not only strives to be a good person, but also seeks what is good and chooses to act in a good way.
How "integrity" compares with "honesty"! If integrity is telling myself the truth, and honesty is the truth I tell others, then they have commonality. Both integrity and honesty mean "truthful" or "doing the right thing", in a sense. Further, integrity is essentially a clock work of action based on honesty. and can have the connotation of doing it even when it is particularly difficult to do so, or would be extremely easy to get away with if you weren't.
Really interesting discussion. Integrity is fine. But if you are not the boss, it’s better to hide it in a secure place where nobody can find it out.
A proverb: "It's better to be hated for who you are than to be loved for who you're not."
5 Signs You Lack Integrity
Integrity is something we all desire, but how do you know if you have it? And what exactly is it anyway? While there are many things that compromise our integrity, here are five signs that show your integrity is in question:
1. It’s all about you.
2. Your self esteem rises and falls with the opinion of others.
3. You’re hiding things.
4. You fail to do what you said you were going to do.
5. You make too many compromises.
Don’t just think of these things as character flaws, think of what’s at stake: when the crises hit (and they will), you won’t be left standing. Simple as that. When you attend to these things, you integrity grows, and so does your ability to live and lead through difficult times.

It is the personal responsibility of each employee to read and understand the Code and commit to uphold its principles. Employees are required to participate in facilitated Annual Integrity Training sessions each year. New employees should complete the E-learning program based on the Code of Integrity as part of their induction.
When in doubt about the meaning of the Code or its application to specific circumstances, employees should discuss this with their supervisor or manager, the Human Resources department or with the legal department. Employees can also discuss any matter relating to the Code with internal auditors.

SGS is very serious company that I have worked with as an associate for quality assurance in my country (certification)! Yes, they do really need such code and procedures against integrity violation as there are many chances for corruption also!
The other important issue is about integrity of our students. Academic integrity violation have been taken seriously at some Universities! Here are some examples!

Dear Ljubomir . Good post as usual. But the types of integrity violations in universities and among academics may vary a lot. For instance, academic dishonesty may include (but not limited to): plagiarism, cheating, etc., too These are not considered in this thread.
Dear @Mahmoud, I have had some threads on plagiarism, cheating and corruption already, and I will be free to put links here as You have raised these issues. Thanks my friend! Academic issues were treated within these threads!

Quotes About Integrity:
“If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything.” ― Gordon A. Eadie
“When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everyone will respect you.” ― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
Flexible membership
Social exchange relationships entail future obligations that are unspecified and are enforced by norms of reciprocity. Without the protection of contractually specified obligations, the perceived trustworthiness of the partners and the fairness of the exchange become important for developing and maintaining lasting relationships. With social exchange, the obligation to reciprocate is voluntary
Dear Krishnan. Although the concepts of "Flexible membership", "Social exchange relationships", " obligation to reciprocate" seems unclear to me as how to be related to "integrity", yet I found a good article [1] about these points. Reciprocity is a key concept for understanding social behavior. It involves complex interactions of giving and returning. Rational choice theory (RCT) understands reciprocity in terms of self–interest and profit. Reciprocity is rational insofar as it is part of a contractual and self–interested exchange. They argue that reciprocal exchange is symbolic insofar as it produces and enacts many forms of social life by drawing individuals into a relation of recognition. Indeed, reciprocal interactions underlie much online activity, and a fuller understanding of the concept explains important aspects of how social life is conducted with others online. RCT ends up concerning itself more with the integrity of its own models than explaining the meaning or sociality of individual activities.

@ Mahmoud
Integrity is not expected in short term and passer-by relationships.
Integrity is structural in nature. It is a combination of all inward traits that build upon one another to determine who you are. Knowing and doing what is right; Being Committed, Courageous, Honest, Disciplined and Resilient; Setting high standards for behaviour and sticking to them even in difficult situations are the core aptitudes of integrity.
Aristotle's definition of Integrity: "Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting in a particular way."
Integrity means to stand for what you believe in and not being swayed by others; being honest, honourable and true to yourself and those around you and sticking to your beliefs and morals despite what everyone else around you says.
Integrity, honesty, and fairness are the foundation of the educational process. Academic misconduct violates these principles, and demeans not only the student committing the act of misconduct, but the entire University community.
http://community.uconn.edu/academic-integrity-undergraduate-faq/
Educational integrity is a commitment to the key values of honesty, trust, equity, respect and responsibility, and the translation of these values into action (adapted from the Center for Academic Integrity "The Fundamental Values of Academic Integrity" 1999). This view of integrity involves much more than a commitment from students not to cheat or plagiarise. Academic integrity is multi-dimensional and is enabled by all those in the educational enterprise, from students to teachers, librarians, advisors, research colleagues and administrators. It is for this reason that APFEI prefaces ‘integrity’ with ‘educational’ rather than just the more conventional ‘academic’.

Your integrity is everything
"If I had to give just one piece of advice, to anyone, in any career, it would be this: your integrity is everything.
It’s at the core of who you are as a person. It builds trust, and trust is nearly impossible to regain, in any relationship, once it’s lost...
If you have integrity and can be comfortable in your own skin, you won’t need to embellish or deceive. Your actions will represent you well...
What I try to remember: your integrity is your brand … and just like brands in the business world, your individual brand takes years to build and seconds to destroy..."
