Winter stasis is a complex multi-factorial syndrome observed in goats where weight gain falls rapidly during the winter - we currently do not understand the drivers that result in this phenomenon.
Winter stasis is a phenomenon which has been observed by producers and researchers alike. As outlined in the final report for B.GOA.0055: Goat nutrition in Australia – a review (link above), it refers to a pattern of seasonality of feed intake by goats which can be depressed in the cooler winter months and can peak in spring as the weather warms up. The result is that despite adequate food availability live weight gains either slow or cease during winter. Obviously this impacts the marketability of the animals and can cost
producers money in terms of delayed income and potentially wasted feed. This work is relevant for both extensive and intensive goat operations.
