Regarding the miRNA, it depends. For example, you can try use the TRIzol method to extract total RNA (with miRNA) without any kit, but depend of which miRNA are interested for you.
In this work is discussed about the TRIzol method for extract total RNA from cells, and in what cases it is possible and which it is not. And besides that, the authors suggest some strategies that can be done to improve the extraction.

Hi Cash, i have used more than once TRIzol to extract total RNA from single mosquitoes and pools of insects (notice that it is not very easy to extract nucleic acids from mosquitoes). We used this RNA for small-RNA sequencing, focusing on Piwi-RNA, and we always had good results.
Honestly, i find TRIzol better than most kits for RNA extraction.
