I need to do antimicrobial testing of a sample with gram-negative and gram-positive but I can only do BSL 1 in my lab. S.aureus is often used in the literature of similar experiments but it is BSL 2. What would be another gram-positive BSL 1 organism I can use instead?
How about Bacillus subtilis ? But of course, the results cannot be extrapolated to any other strain or species?

You can Consider using Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228. This specific strain is BSL 1.

I think Mariana Emilia Cozzolino suggestion of Staph epidermis is a great suggestion if you want something close to Staph aureus. On the other hand if you just want any Gram + then Bacillus subtilis as Pierre Béguin suggested is good, or Micrococcus, or lactococcus, all are non-pathogenic or commensal.
Again, beware of spores! B subtilise is a spore-forming bacterium and is VERY resistant to most things antimicrobial. I would go for S epidermidis

I will take this into consideration and given the current application of interest I'll pursue S.epidermis ATCC 12228 and consider B.subtilis as an alternative with your comment about spores in mind.
