The arxiv school project you linked is valid because they are using light sources "of different shapes and extensions", comparable in size to (or even larger than) the distance to the phone camera. As expected, it's not a simple inverse square law in those setups. But when they use a point source at a distance that makes its angular size very small, they find that the inverse square law DOES apply.
Contradicting something is also a part of research and it's totally valid.
