Genome editing methods are now commonly used to modify genomes in vivo. Among the more recently emerging technologies are artificially designed nucleases targeting genes of interest that are introduced into cells to induce error-prone double strand breaks (DSBs) in target sequences. Currently, the most widespread genome editing technology is the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein-9 nuclease (Cas9) system, which consists of two components: Cas9 nuclease, and a guide RNA (gRNA) that targets the genome sequence of interest.
