Wheat samples were bought into the lab with yellow stripes and mosaic-like symptoms on the leaves. The diseased leaves were sterilized with 1% NaOH and plated out on pda-C. plates were incubated at 23C for 5 days. Please see the pictures attached of the hyphal growth and spores that were identified under 400x magnification. Please assist with the identification of the fungal/mold species present in the sample.
The culture is Rhizopus spp.
The macrograph is not to clear so it is very difficult to observe the rizid.
The culture is good indication of Rhizopus spp.
I suggest you use sterile distilled water as mountant. That one gives you clear macrograph.

The species of Rhizopus have rhizoids and stolons besides the sporangia with columella. So, the rhizoids are not clear in the attached pictures. If you have another clear pictures, you can attach them.

With about 80% rate, the pictures represent the Zygomycetes fungus Rhizopus, but the rhizoids are not clear in the image. Rhizopus belongs to family Mucoraceae, order Mucorales, class Zygomycetes, phylum Zygomycota and kingdom Fungi.
The mycelium in this fungus Rhizopus is non septate (aseptate), the zoospores are absent and it has columellate sporangia which have a large amount of sporangiospores. These sporangiospores spread whit humid wind and transfer to other plants and infect them and cause rots diseases.
To distinguish between Rhizopus spp. and Mucor spp. The first fungus (Rhizopus) has rhizoid, while the second fungus (Mucor) has no rhizoid. Also, the first fungus produces brown sporangia and sporangiophores, while the second fungus produces gray to white sporangia and sporangiophores.
