Youtube and similar channels for video materials (e.g. used in education) are popular among teachers and students. Why don't we use RG as the single platform for disseminating and discussing such video materials as lectures and animated simulations? What's your view on this?
It's a great idea, but the problem is we don't know whether RG can support proper hosting space and band width or not? Despite that, it is a wonderful suggestion. I think adding webinars and presentation would be wonderful too.
At least, RG offers the upload of media files, including videos as datasets adding to your publications. I have tried this before in a test run.
Definitely yes. It would be good to be able to do research here on Research Gate with online learning. I'm the first one that would sign up. What I am illustrating here is that Research Gate would be a good medium since we are online and there are students that may want to participate.
I see research opportunities everywhere.

RG is a very informative portal for researchers of various fields. There are some points to make this imagination successful.
1. The videos and study material should be well organized according to such large number of subjects,
2. The students should also participate asking their queries
3. the faculties of difefrent subjects can be made available on this site for interaction with students
I wish all the very best for this plan. Actually I am fond of interacting with researchers at this site but due to lack of time I could not.
@Michael et al., I didn't upload videos of lectures. But I uploaded video recordings of my teaching aids for teaching biological processes. So far I have 4 such recordings (Krebs cycle, Glycolysis, Electron Transport Chain and Calvin Cycle); and many RG members have sent messages to say that these are helpful teaching/memory aids:)

@Michael, it is a nice sharing idea! I am not familiar with RG policy about the issue! Definitely, if it becomes possible, many of our students will join Research Gate! RG massification is good!

As Miranda said (7 hours ago), she's uploaded video materials here already as a dataset. Up to now we must download the file and watch it as a local file on our computer or smartphone. If we have any questions or comments, we have to go back to RG and add the feedback on the appropriate dataset page.
RG has a feature for reading PDF without the need to download them. The same we should require for video materials, so that we can give direct feedback as we are used from Youtube, to name an example. Based on your positive responses, I'll approach RG staff and ask you to kindly upvote the request to show your support.

They are working out a similar world-wide curriculum, that would be shared using different platforms (including Google+ and YouTube).
We could use ResearchGate projects to organise course material, and develop best (leading) practices in teaching a specific topic. (One project per topic (and level))

I do no know whether it can be done like in You Tube.But there also,only short videos can be uploaded easily,but not long Videos.
Facebook like Provisions for Photo and Video up loadings giving the URL will be Fantastic. But it Requires a lot of Efforts.
Also Proper Evaluation of the Videos has to be done to Maintain Standards.
At least Provision to up load standard Lecture Videos from Internet by providing just the Relevant URL may be a First Step towards the Goal.
If It can be done it will be Great.

Idea is great. One got be very careful about including any copyright material in their lectures. In private settings in the class it is allowed, may not be allowed in such open setting. Unless it is your own research material and you are delivering a lecture. Like any lab procedure, surgical procedure or how you do something in your lab. Second issue can be video takes too much memory if RG is prepared to afford that.
@Subhash, many thanks for sharing this caveat on delivering materials with copyright. We have had similar discussions on uploading already published papers. Maybe RG can help here in making the multimedia materials available only to RG members for sharing and commenting, who then are by definition from the academic/educational community.
I think it would be great to do so, but we do not know if RG is prepared for such a project.
I mean, videos in general need large space, high speed, large bandwidth and special infrastructure, those might not be currently available, and might increase the running cost of RG services.
It'll be very nice if there is no slow down in the server. One can go through the step by step approach of a particular work, which is very much required who are new to that field.
Some experiments can be shown through videos too.

Researchgate site indicates a color coded guidelines like free to upload,to check before uploading with permission and refrain from uploading.
Such provision has to be provided for Video Lessons also.Of-course that involves some efforts.
It is also to be checked whether uploading,with proper acknowledgment and indication of source and Author's name is allowable,as is being done in some Text Books or Specialized Books.being Published by Reputed Publishers.

It would really be nice, but care need to be taken about the copyright requirements. Probably an easier option could be posting on Youtube with sharing in RG if there are no copyright problems. That way RG servers will not be overloaded. Many of my class lectures are actually streamed through Blackboard used in our eLearning platform for my enrolled students. We need to check with our University policies.
@Nageswara, besides copyright issues, here is the problem: like your institution hundreds of others use Blackboard, Moodle and similar systems that allow streaming and conservation of multimedia materials. How could we possibly gather the experts to study and comments such materials without wasting a lot of time searching and surfing?
Behind RG is the Bill Gates Foundation or he himself, I'm not sure about that. So, there should be some budget available for upgrading the server farm.

I agree that the use of blackboard complicates the issue. We actually use a separate server with Panopto for streaming the classroom lectures. After we record the Panopto system it provides me with a link that can be opened anywhere and you do not have to login. I have to check about the ramifications of using those links outside our University.
The other thing that you rightly point out is the process of searching. It is not going to be easy.

I'll second Radoslaw's comments. There could be copyrighted material that would need to be adhered to.
Additionally, uploading hr (or longer) videos in one piece could be problematic for some playbacks. I recently attended an online class held by UC Irvine via a private Youtube channel - each lecture was one hr, but broken into 10min segments. Something like that should work quite well.
@Jerrold, regarding face2face classes: remember that other than on YT you can download files from RG directly. So, in this case the available bandwidth is not a problem.
Yes, it is abrilliant idea. the educational issue of ResearchGate is very essential. In addition to that this is for the interests of all RG members.
A brilliant idea, and all will be benefit from it. I believe RG will encourage this idea. Most of us have many of materials that we can share.
I think it would help if we narrow down the videos or lectures focusing 'research areas' or research in higher education, otherwise channels like Youtube or vimeo or the like have done the job much better. If we can create such a platform on RG, RG members can make great contributions to the research community.

Excellent idea, it will be very useful for all, I prefer you write to RG editor for creating and programming special link for this issue, and, why not taking into account in RG score, as an activity associated to teacher-researcher, pedagogue-researcher, etc …
Yes, @Noureddine, the score is based partly on your contributions including datasets (e.g. video files) uploaded by you. I'm sure they will eventually find a way to highlight videos in their navigation concept.

If this idea is to be translated into practice, please think of sharing 'authentic videos' from conferences or workshops. Recently, I have video-taped speakers' talks on topics such as Publishing in Higher Education, grammar issues in research and the like. I find these videos are truly vivid with lots of insights shared by speakers. Normally, the permission could be obtained for the sake of educational purposes or sharing among research community. Of course, once the permission is given, editing task is required to make sure the video (to be) shared is of acceptable quality.
