I will give a conceptual answer. Any system can be subjected to modelling and simulation where one has at first describe the physical model after which one based on the physical ,model one develops the mathematical model. The mathematical model is the equations describing the components of the system model and the inter relationship between them. Then one can solve the system of equations to together with the relevant boundary and initial conditions. Numerical solutions methods are available for many systems of equations.These numerical solutions can be implemented by the digital computers. The digital computers became very powerful that they can tackle the solution of large scale systems such as the power distribution systems in a relatively large geographical area.

After getting the solution one has to validate it which can be done by using the existing experimental results of the already running systems.

As the solution is verified many times and applied for many cases one can use it safely for designing the new networks.

In fact in my domain of experience one can not imagine how to design to large scale. integrated circuits without CAD tools. The tools become mature such that one needs only one cycle to tackle the design. That is it saved the very costly experimentation.Also the there is CAD tools for the radio design of the mobile networks on which the communication engineers relay on it massively to design plan new mobile networks. I this is analogously applied to other branches of science such as power distribution networks.

The CAD tools do not contain only the theoretical foundations of the problem but also the experience and the empirical formulas for the behavior of some system parts. This makes them trust able and feasible.

Urban energy modeling is a growing field these days as cities are housing more and more populations all around the world, consequently facing challenges related to providing energy and facing climate change and pollution. Urban energy models are considered as tools to assist the decision-making process in energy planning.

During my PhD, I have worked on urban building energy modeling by adopting a bottom-up approach to simulate the energy consumption of thousand of buildings. They help in simulating current energy demand/supply to identify optimal solutions to reduce demand and increase supply. They are then used to estimate future demands either by extrapolation from the current situation or by simulating the energy variations under different conditions such as extreme weather conditions, penetration of new technologies, integration of renewable energy to list a few. These kind of models can be extended for microclimate, wind patterns, energy network optimization, daylight and solar energy availability studies...

I think these models will be further developed in the next few years as they bring insights on how to upgrade existing cities and how to build new efficient and sustainable ones.

Hi Diego, very nice question! I will try to be concise, but we can talk better on this.

Similarly, to the use of modelling tools at national level for energy and climate mitigation the application of this approach at local scale is highly relevant for knowledge-based policy decision. There are available a high range of different tools and approaches (e.g. simulation vs optimization) that can be used to model city energy systems. Nevertheless, the tool selection depends on the type and complexity of question to be answered. For example, if the problem target one specific sector (e.g. residential or transport) you can use a model only for this sector (e.g. COPERT) or for covering all the city energy system you can more complex models like LEAP or TIMES. Another factor that determine the tool typology selection for city energy system modeling is the availability and quality of necessary information/data. This is relevant on local scale assessments as it affects the quality and confidence on the results. One option for overcame this issue is the inclusion of city stakeholder, including the municipality technical teams, as they can have direct access to data and provide additional in-site know-how that can support and validate the model structure and results. Also, the inclusion of local stakeholders should be done in an early stage of city energy modelling activities as it benefits scenarios development and assumptions to provide more plausible energy and climate mitigation strategies.

Thanks for your input. District heating seems very important when discussing on the future of cities . It is a challenge then to deploy DH in energy models for planning, you know, the short-term (demand profiles) vs long-term (annnual performance and infrastructures when looking at urban design) approaches.

Dear Diego,

The energy planning tools are supports. An aid to make decisions. Modeling techniques are the method, they will be used to solve the model. The model is the description of the physical world through mathematics. I recommend that to develop a model, you need to test models such as HOMER, LEAP, TIMES, MARKAL, Energy Planning ... You can understand a lot their logic. You determine its advantages and disadvantages. Finally, a suitable model can be born for the conditions in which I will work.

We had wondered the similar maybe related question, and have performed a study. We have analyzed some Solar Power Plant sites established and compare that areas with the Environemental Plan. cuz Environmental plan does not reflect energy potential, we have concluded that energy driven oppurtunities should be seen in that plans.
