Successful Academicians are not always good administrators, good administration needs many factors like personality traits, knowledge, skills, attitude (sometimes, people have all these things) but they don't like administrative responsibilities; sometimes, less successful Academicians are good in administration, so personal preferences play important part to get successfully involve in administrative roles and responsibilities.

A successful scientist cannot always be a successful administrator. It will be better if the scientist is engaged in scientific activities, without being distracted by the decision of administrative issues.

Administrative duties block the creativity and motivation of a real scientific researcher. However, this type of work merger is a product of 'corporate academia', i.e. it is a matter of the economization of academic labor.

In practice, these responsibilities was passed onto subordinates, primarily to those who do it better. In recent years, this implicit separation of duties has become almost official, at least in Russia. There is such a specialty as a scientific manager (not scientific leader). This is not bad, but they should not interfere into purely scientific problems. Many of managers think that they can do it, but this is a false feeling.

I think everyone should do what he's trained to do. I think of the same things not only for academics but also for other professions. A doctor should not run the hospital. He should take care of his patients. A professor should not run the faculty. He should do research, educate students. Because we have schools to train managers. The graduates of those schools should do management. But I think differently for team leadership while exercising profession. Managing the work team is a different task. Experience, knowledge, and skills should be evaluated here.

I believe, if an academician has exceptional capabilities and expertise to contribute in administration meaningfully, there is no harm to be involved in it, rather that particular center will be operated more scholar and educator-friendly.

Of course, this is unfair to the academic, who studied for years and is supposed to devote his time only to science and not to management ... But this does not prevent the academic from acquiring some management skills in various fields

Administrative duties are basically project duties within scientific research - but when universities are forced to tighten budgets researchers and administrative people might get into head on competition to be able to secure their employment. Academician was trained for scientific works, the quality and quantity of the output of his or her works depend much on how much time he or she may devote for the works. Administrative matters will need to be handled in projects especially for large projects, but to rely project administrative matters to academician would lower his or her productivity. In big projects, administrative matters would be better handled by relevance administrative person.

Academicians can do administrative duties, but it is not necessary to be successful.

In general successful academicians have not been good administrators. Thus in order to appoint someone as a chair or head of a department, one must first make sure that the person is truly interested in administrative work and is willing to take additional classes or receive training to be a good administrator. Many faculty members hate doing paperwork (other than writing papers to publish) and some show blatant disregard to policies and procedures as though they a re beneath their cadre.

Academics need not all the time get engaged with administrative work due to multiple reasons - devoting time purely for administrative work makes an academic lose the essenece of a good academician, managing the situation might take precedence in administrative work and pushing research work and creative works aside.

I am against such duties for academics..

A successful academician has 3 core tasks: research, teaching and consultancy. If he is overburdened with administrative work, then he loses his expertise in the 3 core areas.

Over time, this academician may start to look for an academic job in another university. Ultimately, both the academician and the university loses!

This is a critical issue in many countries and there is a pressing need for changes. Perhaps the administrator position should only be held for 1-2 years on a rotation basis.

I totally agree with you dear Teddy Lian. Administrative work overwhelms the academician and a waste of effort and time .. The tasks of the academician must be limited to the scientific and educational level

From experience I can say academician better handle the administrative duties in academic institution unless administrators that are specialized to work as admis of academic institutions are available. For instance my employer is a research organization so far the admi being led by technical staff that are researchers. Sometimes non-technical admis may lack all necessary knowhow to facilitate activities of the research organization as result mutual understanding on basis of the tasks may be compromised. I have seen sometimes a business management specialist who trained in non-agricultural industries miss-manage agricultural research related responsibilities. the vice versa could also hold true. did i get it??
