With some colleagues, we decided to investigate differences in psychological well-being between professional athletes, amateur athletes and non-athletes. We cannot locate much on the amateur group. Any ideas?
I will write down the articles with brief description
1.
Test of Psychological Traits for yield PAR-P1 showed no differences between pro and amateur :
Vargas, Pedro Carazo, and Gerardo Alonso Araya Vargas. "Perfil de rasgos psicológicos para el rendimiento deportivo en hombres y mujeres paracticantes de taekwondo." Revista iberoamericana de psicología del ejercicio y el deporte 5.2 (2010): 253-265.
2. Experienced martial arts fighters had faster alert, but made more errors and had worse divided attention
Fontani, Giuliano, et al. "ATTENTION IN ATHLETES OF HIGH AND LOW EXPERIENCE ENGAGED IN DIFFERENT OPEN SKILL SPORTS 1, 2." Perceptual and motor skills 102.3 (2006): 791-805.
3. Differences between martial art fighters; kung-fu fighter had fastest RT
Sánchez-López, Javier, et al. "Differences between Judo, Taekwondo and Kung-fu Athletes in Sustained Attention and Impulse Control." Psychology 4.07 (2013): 607.
4. That research showed no significant differences between pro and novices:
Sanchez-Lopez, Javier, et al. "Differences in visuo-motor control in skilled vs. novice martial arts athletes during sustained and transient attention tasks: a motor-related cortical potential study." PloS one 9.3 (2014): e91112.
5. Differences between football players, showed some interesting results
Vestberg, Torbjörn, et al. "Executive functions predict the success of top-soccer players." PloS one 7.4 (2012): e34731.
6. Here athletes were better in problem solving and inhibition task than non- athletes:
Athletics and Executive Functioning: How Athletic Participation and Sport Type Correlate with Cognitive Performance
Jed Jacobson & Leland Matthaeus
2014
7. MOST INTERESTING one, in my opinion is :
Shim, Jaeho, et al. "The use of anticipatory visual cues by highly skilled tennis players." Journal of motor behavior 37.2 (2005): 164-175.
That studies were quite complex, showed that pro vs amateur athletes differences in motor cues- pro athletes are better in predicting effects of tennis serve before the player actually hits the ball (they predicting by watching the movement).
In my opinion, last reserches shows that for example, better fighter don't have to have better performance in cantab RT test than worse fighters. Pro fighter fights better on the ring, becuase he or she is better in verbal and motor cues reading, therefore can predict next punches and kicks.
Hi, I dont´t know if you are interested to in the differences in visual perception and cognition between high level-elite athletes and novices, so, if is it, I recommend take a look to the book: Visual Perception and Action in Sport, by A. Mark Williams,Keith Davids, John Garrett Pascoe Williams, pp 130, related to expertise in sport.
Hi, I advice you uses a sample of runners, because is a sport that nowadays practice a lot of people and there are many races every weekend and you can compare this data with professional athletes. I and my research group are investigating some psychological variables in this group of people and we are finding some conclusions really interesting, cos amateur runners each time more are living like a professional athletes.
Hi Georgios, we are starting with this project. For the time being, only we have a first study with amateur runners, it was presented in two national congress. We hope publish something in the next months. Now, we are developing the new experimental design with more variables and in this phase we are going to include the two samples (amateurs vs professional). If you want more information,or something like that, you could send me a email ([email protected]). For us will be a pleasure collaborate with you.
