Was it technology that caused globalization? Or expansion of military in the old days etc...? That resulted in the international style today, making buildings all around the world look the 'same'?
I think that as there were a competition between nations across the countries as continents, That had an impact of how far buildings would be better than others made. So there might be a copy form and architecture design at first , then to add the supplement that could make the difference in the mean time. But Yes, I guess that technology (case of skyscrapers) or wars through the world surely made that globalization faster.
It didn't happen by accident though as perhaps your question implies. The advent of modern travel that we now take for granted, excited people then. Le corbusier called for architecture to be like a modern ship travelling around the world. Be cReful what you wish for! Now we feel the loss of individuality of location and context of place.
