I have a few years' goal to become a professor in my field. I have an interest in teaching and research. I am currently studying for a PhD but funding has been a major challenge. The papers I've published have been made possible personal funds from my little earning. I have applied for several research grants not to no avail. What else can I do at this point? What do you think I'm not doing right? What am I to improve on? Who should I be (not) talking to?
The key is to find an area with lots of interest and funding where you want to make a difference and find interest. Pick one topic in that area and pursue it. If that proves rewarding, keep going with it. If not, pivot to another topic in that big area. You may not hit on the first topic, but pursuing it will give you visibility to choose well the next time.
