Sometimes animal blood is not available for blood splatter exercises in Forensic Science lab activities involving artificial blood. Many online recipes look like blood but do not act like authentic animal blood.
As far as I understand, in forensic sciences, the undermentioned materials can be used to simulate blood evidence for training, testing, or demonstration purposes:
1. Synthetic Blood
This is a commercially available synthetic blood which is designed to mimic the physical and chemical properties of real blood. This material often contains materials that replicate viscosity, colour, and clotting properties.
2. Animal Blood
In many times, blood from animals like pigs or cows is sometimes used because its properties are similar to human blood. However, its use in many democracies is regulated due to ethical and health concerns.
The two mentioned materials are more applicable in Crime Scene Training Courses. It is highly believed that the materials create realistic blood patterns and stains for learning analysis techniques.
Finally, it should be understood that the choice of simulant depends on the intended application e.g. training, testing purposes or demonstration in courts for the need of realistic representation whereby during time of simulation, ethical considerations should be upheld.
