The water uptake after MW modification is expected to increase as the wood is expected to become more porous. Now my question is can the reverse of this happen as well, that is the sample becomes hydrophobic as resins and other extractives often ooze out during the process?

Thank you for your answer. I think we may get different results on the surface and core of the same sample. With surface becoming hydrophobic making it dimensionally stable and the core becoming more hydrophilic and porous. This may increase penetration depth of preservatives.
