I am planning to do a study on emotional intelligence of managers based on semi structured interviews. I want to explore emotional intelligence in this pandemic context and hence going for an exploratory study based on semi structured interviews. There are already pre existing scales on emotional intelligence by different researchers. I am interested to know can I do a study based on a construct with pre existing scale?
Sure, why not! Especially since the scales you mention are (I think) all self-report inventories. Interviews yield distinct (though overlapping) information, and if well constructed probably get closer to the core construct. I'd advise including some mini-scenarios in the interview where you describe a situation and ask how they might respond.

If it is feasible, you might consider doing both as that would allow you to comment on the strengths and limitations of the self-report measures and could provide validity to your interview data. If doing both is not feasible, it is certainly fine to just do the interviews. Good luck on your research!
