I might be oversimplifying your question, but it seems that all aspects of indigenous religious traditions should be preserved if the religion is being practiced. All teachings or practices remain valuable for today, again, if it is being practiced. It's not up to science or other academics to say yes or no. As long as there is someone who practices and believes in their religion, it should be preserved. However, would you expand on this question. It's not clear what the real issues are. I'm not really sure if there is something you did not include in the question. This can turn into a really interesting discussion.
Steve, thanks for asking for clarification. What I mean is, what teachings or practices from indigenous religious traditions should be adopted by modern society at large?
Genuine resiliency and protection of nature. Nature has been their source we must let them know that nature has been given to us to be used but we should not be sacrificing the needs of the future generation. Thus, we have to learn from their strength in facing life but lead them to the sustainable development of the environment. Please refer to several articles of the UN and the World
The best thing about Bulgarian religious traditions is the worship of the people who contributed to the preservation of the Bulgarian roots and the days of the year in which their names are celebrated, and they are numerous. Almost every day of the year is celebrated one of the names of great Bulgarians - Ivan, Georgi, Vasil, Peter, Angel and others. And all people have so-called Day of the Name, where a man bearing thе same name is also honored with respect.
I guess there is a clear difference between respecting their belief system vs adapting it . All of us come with our own belief (input by parents and ancestors ) . Respect it /preserve it ... for all I know , I guess they cared about land/earth and nature more than us ...
Hi Kirk, my response would be the same. For example, Many religions have stopped some of the observances that defined the religion (or sect) when first practiced. For example, Judaism began as orthodox observance of the 613 "Mitzvahs" or laws that in the Torah (first Five Books of the Christian Bible). These were written down as God dictated them to Moses. Over the years, there have been changes made by various sects such as Reform and Conservative. have my own beliefs about these changes, but Aparna had a response that is closer to what I believe. I might not believe or agree with how or if someone practices their religion, However, as long as it gives meaning to people, it should be preserved. The only qualification is if it has illegal or immoral practices. What is meant by that is often points of contention which I don't want to get into now. This can lead to negative behavior towards others in the name of God which I am not prepared to discuss.. This is an interesting topic, but that is often argued using emotion rather than theology. I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings or belief system. In generally, anything of value should be preserved. Remember, many religions preserve their values, tenets, and practices simply because they believe it is what God requires.
