We often hear the proverb 'the grass on the other side of the fence is greener'. Some of us on RG may have emigrated or decided to emigrate; and some may have decided to stay put for various reasons. What are the reasons that influenced your choice?

The brain drain effect in Greece has reached a tremendous level and I think that somebody should stay here, otherwise we will be 'luxury servants' of the world. No, Miranda I prefer staying home, as for the money, ok money is not everything in life.
Miranda what you mentioned is right if you apply for well developed countries but it is not the same case in third world countries, they have their own problems. One way if you want to update yourself knowledge wise certainly you can emigrate no need to hesitate. As I mentioned if you do not get good opportunities in your country make a move otherwise stay there and work for your country.
I prefer to be trained and do research in a developed country, then apply my gained knowledge to researches done in my own country. Emigration is not necessary. As scientists, we are entitled to travel for personal development. We just need to know where to look and apply.

So far I stayed back because of my old folks, but many relatives have emigrated. Do you know they felt so sad when my dad passed away and they weren't able to return? They were just too busy, too many commitments. Another aunt passed away, and again they couldn't come home.
Thank God, I managed, with the help of my cousin's family, Indonesian maid and church friends.
I think it is the personal matter of preference.
As myself, I don't subscribe the idea of migration. Lamp in my house should lit my house first, before it lits the neighbour's house.
But, one who migrates, is his personal way of thinking. He/She have every right to decide for himself/herself. I respect his rights.
@Prof Kamal, it is only when there is no alternative that I would emigrate. I still carry on, although I have no research funding. It's not easy. But I have kind friends on RG who help me, and never think the worse of me :)

For science there is no boudaries.Its our job to find where can give us more information and where we do our best.Sometimes we have to be flexible if we like to be scientist.
